Chapter 2 - The Grand Entrance (1,800 words)The estate parking lot was already packed with luxury vehicles when Daniel’s car pulled up to the security gates.

Music drifted across the manicured lawns—laughter, splashing from the massive in-ground pool, and the clinking of ice in crystal cocktail glasses. It was the quintessential upper-class American summer gathering.
As Daniel and I walked through the wrought-iron side gates into the sprawling backyard, the ambient chatter seemed to lower by a few decibels.
I kept my chin up, my hand resting securely inside the crook of Daniel’s arm. He moved with an easy, fluid grace that commanded attention without demanding it. Within seconds, my former mother-in-law, Eleanor, spotted us near the patio bar. Her face lit up with a brilliant, genuine smile, and she practically rushed over, waving frantically.
“Maggie, darling! You made it!” Eleanor exclaimed, pulling me into a warm embrace before turning her sharp eyes toward my companion. And who might this be?”
Before I could fumble through an introduction, Daniel stepped forward with absolute charm.
“I’m Daniel, Mrs. [LastName],” he said warmly, offering his hand with polished etiquette. “Maggie’s partner. It’s an absolute pleasure to finally meet you. She talks about you constantly.”
Eleanor beamed, clearly charmed. “Oh, please, call me Eleanor! It’s wonderful to meet you, Daniel. You’re entirely too handsome for this old backyard, but we’re thrilled to have you.”
Across the lawn, standing near the shallow end of the pool, the golden-hour sunlight caught two very familiar figures.
Ryan and Lucille.
Lucille was lounging on a white chaise lounge, wearing a designer white bikini and oversized sunglasses, while Ryan stood beside her, holding two cold beers. As Ryan glanced up and saw us standing with his mother, his eyes locked onto Daniel’s arm draped securely around my waist.
Instantly, Ryan’s expression shifted. The relaxed, self-satisfied grin vanished from his face, replaced by a dark, suspicious scowl. He handed his beer to Lucille, said something in her ear, and began marching across the grass directly toward us.
I felt my heart race. My palms grew instantly sweaty. The old, conditioned fear of Ryan’s disapproval flared up in my chest.
Daniel felt the slight tremor in my hand. Without missing a beat, he leaned down, pressed a tender, affectionate kiss to my temple, and whispered, “I’ve got you. Just breathe.”
“Well, well, well,” Ryan’s loud, mocking voice cut across the patio space before he even reached us. “Look who decided to crawl out of the house. And who is your little friend, Maggie? Did you have to rent a date for the afternoon so you wouldn't have to show up alone?”
The surrounding guests within earshot went quiet, turning their heads to watch the confrontation unfold.
Ryan stood right in front of us, crossing his arms over his chest, his lip curled into a sneer. He looked Daniel up and down with open, arrogant contempt.
“Him? Your boyfriend?” Ryan laughed loudly, forcing a harsh sound meant to humiliate me. “Come on, Maggie. Who are you kidding? You clearly paid this guy off Craigslist to come here and stroke your ego. Look at him—he’s way out of your league, and everyone here knows it.”
Humiliation burned hot and fierce across my cheeks. I wanted the earth to open up and swallow me whole. I opened my mouth to stutter out an excuse, ready to pack up my kids and run away in shame.
But Daniel didn't flinch.
Instead, Daniel let out a calm, relaxed chuckle. He didn't look angry; he looked amused, like a seasoned expert watching an amateur make a fool of himself on a public stage.
“Craigslist?” Daniel repeated smoothly, raising an eyebrow. “That’s a cute projection, my friend. But unlike some people here, I actually know how to recognize real quality when I see it.”
Ryan’s face flushed red. “Listen here, pal, I don't know who you think you—"
“More importantly,” Daniel interrupted, his voice dropping into a calm, authoritative register that silenced Ryan instantly, “I didn't realize fifteen years of marriage and three children meant a man gets to discard a remarkable woman just because she spent a decade building a home while he chased shallow reflections.”
The entire patio went dead silent.

Ryan stood frozen, his mouth half-open, staring at Daniel as if he had just spoken in a foreign language.
And that was only the beginning.
