Chapter 9 - The New Era (1,800 words)Six months later.

The annual San Diego Business Gala was the premier social event of the year, held in the grand ballroom of the Hotel del Coronado.

Hundreds of executives, investors, philanthropists, and community leaders milled about in glittering evening gowns and tailored tuxedos, sipping champagne and networking under cascading crystal chandeliers.

Standing near the center of the ballroom, holding a glass of sparkling mineral water, was Victoria [LastName]—Ryan’s sister, who had always maintained a polite distance during the divorce drama.

Victoria approached me as I stood talking with the chief financial officer of a major tech logistics firm.

“Maggie,” Victoria smiled warmly, kissing my cheek as she stepped up. “Goodness, every time I see you, you look more radiant. Congratulations on the massive downtown acquisition announcement this morning. The whole city is talking about Vance Capital and [LastName] Enterprises merging into a single powerhouse.”

“Thank you, Victoria,” I smiled, returning the hug. “It’s been a busy six months, but the team has worked incredibly hard.”

“Well, your children must be so proud of their mother,” Victoria said sincerely. Then, her expression shifted slightly, her voice dropping to a low, confidential tone. “Have you... have you heard anything about Ryan lately?”

I shook my head gently. “Not directly. I know he and Lucille parted ways a few months ago after the high-rise lease was terminated. Last I heard, he moved back in with your parents temporarily while trying to figure out his next move.”

Victoria sighed, shaking her head. “It broke Mom and Dad’s heart. Dad still makes him work in the warehouse division on minimum wage just to teach him humility, but Ryan is a shell of who he used to be. He spends all his time bitter, blaming everyone else for his mistakes.”

It was a tragic ending for a man who had believed he was invincible, but it was a tragedy entirely of his own making.

Before Victoria could continue, the ballroom doors at the far end of the room opened, and the murmurs of the crowd shifted.

Dominic Vance walked through the entrance.

He wore a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, looking impossibly handsome and commanding. As he scanned the crowded room, his eyes instantly locked onto mine across the ballroom. A slow, warm, affectionate smile spread across his face.

He didn't mingle or stop to talk to the corporate sycophants hovering near the entrance; he walked with direct, purposeful strides straight through the crowd toward me.

“Excuse us, Victoria,” I smiled politely at my former sister-in-law.

“Go right ahead,” Victoria winked, taking a sip of her champagne.

Dominic stopped in front of me, his hazel eyes sparkling with amusement. “You clean up terribly well, Ms. [LastName].”

“And you clean up like a high-stakes corporate raider, Mr. Vance,” I teased back, taking a sip of my water.

“Actually, tonight I’m off the clock,” Dominic said softly, extending his arm toward me. “Which means I am officially cashing in on that dinner date you promised me after we finalized the corporate merger this afternoon.”

My heart did a familiar, pleasant flutter—the same flutter I had felt when he defended me at the Fourth of July pool party.

“Is that so?” I raised an eyebrow playfully. “And where is this executive date taking place?”

Dominic smiled, leaning in close so his voice was meant only for me. “Nowhere corporate. Just a quiet little bistro down by the harbor, where nobody knows our names, and nobody has to pretend to be anything other than who they are.”

I looked up into his eyes, feeling a profound sense of peace, excitement, and absolute freedom.

“Lead the way,” I said, slipping my hand into the crook of his arm.

As we walked out of the grand ballroom together into the warm San Diego night, leaving the glittering lights and corporate ghosts far behind us, I knew one thing for certain:

My story didn't end the day my ex-husband told me I wasn't attractive enough.

That was just the day my real life finally began.
