Chapter 5 - The Secret Partner (1,800 words)The Fourth of July party finally wound down as dusk settled over the San Diego estate, painting the sky in brilliant shades of violet and orange.

Daniel drove me back to my house in Lincoln Park, dropping me off right at my front door. The kids were already inside with my sister, who had babysat for the afternoon.
“Well,” Daniel said, cutting the engine as the car sat idling in my driveway. He turned to me in the dim dashboard light, offering a warm, genuine smile. “I’d say the mission was a resounding success. Did we achieve what you wanted?”
I looked at him, feeling a strange mixture of gratitude and sudden sadness that our arrangement was ending.
“You didn't just achieve what I wanted, Daniel. You gave me back my dignity,” I said softly, reaching out to touch his hand on the center console. “How much do I owe you for the day? Name your price.”
Daniel laughed—a rich, deep sound that made my chest tighten in ways I didn't expect. He shook his head, gently pulling his hand away not in rejection, but as he reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, sleek business card.
“Consider my services pro bono for the day, Maggie,” he said, sliding the card across the console toward me.
I looked down at the heavy cardstock in the fading light.
DOMINIC VANCE Managing Partner, Vance Capital Holdings
My breath caught in my throat. I slowly looked up from the card to his face.
“Vance Capital?” I whispered, the name instantly triggering alarms in my head. Vance Capital was a multi-billion-dollar private equity firm based out of New York and San Francisco—the very firm that had recently acquired distressed commercial assets all over Southern California. “You’re... you’re Dominic Vance? The investor?”
“Guilty as charged,” Dominic smiled, leaning back against his seat. “And to answer your unspoken question: no, I’m not a professional actor from an online platform. My sister is a talent agent, and when I overheard you frantically calling her agency looking for a last-minute date to a brutal family function... I happened to be in her office. I was intrigued. So, I decided to play the role myself.”
I sat there in total shock, my mind racing. “You lied to me.”
“I played a part to help a woman who deserved a fighting chance,” Dominic corrected gently. “And as it turns out, Maggie... I happened to be looking very closely at [LastName] Enterprises’ commercial real estate portfolio last week.”
The puzzle pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity.
“You’re the institutional investor holding Ryan’s emergency bridge loans,” I whispered.
Dominic’s smile vanished, replaced by the razor-sharp focus of a high-stakes dealmaker. “Ryan [LastName] overextended himself by thirty million dollars on three speculative luxury high-rises in downtown San Diego. His firm is technically insolvent. Vance Capital holds the debt. If I call in that loan tomorrow morning at nine o’clock, [LastName] Enterprises ceases to exist, and this entire estate goes into foreclosure.”
I stared at him, my heart pounding against my ribs. “Why are you telling me this?”
“Because,” Dominic leaned closer, his voice low and intense, “when I walked into that backyard today and watched how a brilliant, hardworking woman had been discarded by a arrogant fraud who took credit for her sacrifices... I decided I didn't just want to foreclose on a bad businessman. I wanted to see justice.”

He reached out, his fingers lightly brushing a stray lock of hair from my cheek.
“Your ex-husband thinks he owns the world, Maggie,” Dominic said softly. “He’s about to find out who really holds the mortgage.”
