Chapter 10 - A New Christmas (1800 Words)Two years after that dark Christmas night, I hosted my own holiday dinner.

My dining room table was set for six: Elena, David, their two young children, and my new partner, Thomas—a gentle, compassionate high school history teacher who treated me with unyielding respect, kindness, and quiet devotion.

The house smelled of roasted turkey, cinnamon, fresh pine, and warm apple pie. Soft jazz played from the speakers in the corner. Laughter rang through the warm, brightly lit room.

At 6:43 PM—the exact minute I had pulled up to Carol’s house two years ago—I stood by the window holding a mug of warm spiced cider.

Outside, a gentle winter snow was beginning to fall, dusting the trees in a soft, pristine blanket of white.

My lip showed only a tiny, faint silver line where the split had healed—a quiet reminder of the night I finally decided my life was worth saving.

Thomas walked up behind me, placing a gentle hand on my shoulder, his touch warm, safe, and respectful. “Everything okay, Lauren?”

I turned around, looking at the warm room, the happy faces of my family, and the life I had courageously built from the ashes of my past.

I smiled—a genuine, deep smile that reached all the way to my eyes.

“Everything is perfect,” I said softly.

I walked back to the table, took my seat at the head of the room, and celebrated Christmas in absolute, unshakeable peace.
