Chapter 4 - The Arraignment (1800 Words)Tuesday morning brought a sharp, biting frost over the city.

The county courthouse was a gray stone building that smelled of damp wool, industrial floor wax, and coffee. I sat in a small private conference room alongside my family law attorney, Rachel Sterling—a sharp, composed woman in her fifties who specialized in high-conflict domestic abuse divorces.
“Mark’s legal team is going to attempt to negotiate a plea deal today,” Rachel explained, spreading several legal documents across the oak table. “His defense lawyer, Arthur Pendelton, is a heavy hitter in the city. He’s going to argue that Mark has no prior criminal record, that he’s a prominent community member, and that this was an isolated domestic incident fueled by holiday stress.”
“Is an isolated incident covered by three separate medical records from urgent care clinics over four years?” I asked calmly.
Rachel smiled—a cold, razor-sharp smile. “That’s our secret weapon, Lauren. When we present the subpoenaed medical records from the three out-of-county clinics you visited, along with the digital audio recording from Christmas night, their 'isolated incident' narrative completely falls apart. We are filing a formal petition for a Permanent Restraining Order today, alongside a petition for emergency spousal support and exclusive possession of your residence.”
At 10:00 AM, we entered Courtroom 3B.
Mark was brought out from the holding area wearing an orange jumpsuit, his hands handcuffed at his waist. Without his tailored suits and styled hair, he looked small, hollow, and remarkably unremarkable.
Sitting in the front row of the gallery was Carol, dressed in a black wool coat, holding a leather designer handbag like a shield. Beside her sat Denise and Paul, looking pale and miserable.
When Mark caught sight of me sitting at the prosecution table, his eyes flashed with familiar anger, but it was quickly checked by his attorney, who tapped his arm firmly.
The judge, a stern woman named Honorable Marcus, reviewed the file in front of her.
“Mr. Pendelton,” Judge Marcus began, looking down over her reading glasses at Mark’s attorney. “I have reviewed the preliminary police report, the physical evidence photos, and the transcript of the audio recording recovered from the scene. The state is charging your client with Felony Domestic Battery resulting in bodily harm and Interference with Emergency Communications.”
Pendelton stood up, adjusting his buttoned coat. “Your Honor, my client is an established architect with deep roots in this community. He poses no flight risk. We request that bail be set at a reasonable amount and that my client be released on his own recognizance under the supervision of his mother, Mrs. Carol Miller.”
Rachel stood up immediately. “Your Honor, we strongly oppose release without substantial bail and a strict protection order. The defendant has a documented history of escalating physical violence, as evidenced by prior medical records now submitted to the court. Furthermore, during the recorded incident on December 25th, the defendant’s mother actively encouraged the violence, stating on tape: 'That’s what happens when a wife won’t listen. Good job, son.'”
A murmur rippled through the gallery. Several reporters from the local court news beat began writing feverishly in their notebooks.
Carol leaned forward in her seat, her face turning bright red with embarrassment as the entire courtroom turned to look at her.
Judge Marcus’s expression turned extraordinarily cold. She looked directly at Carol in the gallery, then turned back to Mark.
“In light of the recorded evidence and the severity of the victim's injuries,” Judge Marcus declared, her gavel resting in her hand, “bail is set at $100,000. A Temporary Restraining Order is immediately issued. The defendant is to have zero contact, direct or indirect, with the victim, Lauren Miller. He is barred from approaching her workplace, her current residence, or her family members. Should he post bail, he will be placed on continuous electronic GPS monitoring.”
BANG.
The gavel struck the wooden block.
Mark turned toward his mother, his face contorted in panic. “Mom! Pay the bail! Get me out of here!”
Carol scrambled to her feet, waving her hands toward the bailiffs. “Your Honor! You don't understand! My son is a good boy! This girl lured him into this!”

“Remove that woman from my courtroom if she causes another disturbance,” Judge Marcus commanded sharply.
Two bailiffs stepped toward Carol, guiding her firmly out the double doors. I watched her leave, her dignity completely shattered, her golden illusion exposed for the whole world to see.
