Chapter 8 - The Financial Settlement (1800 Words)With the criminal case concluded and Mark sentenced to eighteen months in the state correctional facility, the final phase of our separation was the civil divorce settlement.

Because the divorce was filed on grounds of egregious fault and domestic cruelty, combined with Mark’s criminal conviction, the family court judge ruled overwhelmingly in my favor.
Our marital home was ordered to be sold immediately, with seventy-five percent of the net proceeds awarded directly to me as financial compensation and personal damages. Furthermore, the court ordered that Mark pay my full legal fees from his remaining private investment accounts.
When the property was sold three months later, I received a certified bank check for $410,000.
I sat at my kitchen table in my new, light-filled apartment on the north side of the city, holding the check in my hands.
For nine years, Mark had used financial dominance to keep me trapped, constantly reminding me that he was the primary breadwinner, that I contributed nothing of financial value, and that without him, I would end up destitute on the street.

I used a portion of the funds to launch a private consulting business, utilizing my degree in graphic design—a career Mark had forced me to abandon years ago. Within six months, I had secured three corporate retainer clients, building an independent income stream that belonged entirely to me.
