Chapter 7 - The Trap is Set

The Vance Foundation Annual Gala was held in the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel. It was the social event of the Manhattan autumn, packed with senators, hedge fund titans, and legacy heiresses.
Victoria Vance stood on the elevated stage, a glass of champagne in her hand, smiling radiantly beneath the blinding flashbulbs of society photographers.
“Tonight,” Victoria announced into the microphone, her voice dripping with calculated sweetness, “we honor the legacy of my late sister, Elena. In two days, Elena’s daughter, little Nora, turns two. As trustee of the Vance Memorial Fund, I am proud to announce a fifty-million-dollar endowment to our flagship hospital, Crestview Memorial!”
Applause rippled through the ballroom.
Dr. Catherine Ross, sitting in the front row in an expensive emerald gown, raised her glass toward Victoria with a smug, knowing grin.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom swung wide open.
A hush fell over the room.
Adrian Mercer walked in.
He was breathtaking in a midnight-blue tuxedo, his posture commanding and aristocratic. But it was not Adrian who caused eight hundred guests to gasp in shock.
Walking beside him, her hand securely laced in his, was Maya.
She was magnificent. Maya wore an off-the-shoulder gown of deep emerald silk that complemented her striking hazel eyes. Her dark hair was swept into an elegant chignon, held in place by a vintage diamond comb. Around her neck was the Mercer family heirloom—a teardrop diamond necklace worth four million dollars.
And nestled in Maya’s arms, wearing a matching ivory lace dress, was Nora.
Nora wasn't hiding. She wasn't trembling. Her little arms were wrapped loosely around Maya’s neck, her bright hazel eyes taking in the crowd with curious wonder.
Victoria’s champagne glass slipped from her fingers.
The crystal shattered violently against the wooden podium.
“Adrian?” Victoria whispered into the hot microphone, her voice broadcasting throughout the silent ballroom. “What… what is this?”
Adrian didn't stop until he reached the foot of the stage. The society photographers began snapping photos frantically, the strobes illuminating the absolute panic on Dr. Ross’s face.
“We’re here to celebrate my daughter’s birthday early, Victoria,” Adrian said, his baritone voice carrying effortlessly across the ballroom. “And to introduce my wife.”
Gasps exploded across the room.
“Wife?!” Victoria shrieked, forgetting the press entirely. “You married that… that common girl? Adrian, she is nobody! She’s an imposter trying to steal Elena’s estate!”
Maya stepped forward, Nora resting securely on her hip.
Maya looked Victoria dead in the eye—the woman who had lived in luxury off the blood and tears of stolen infants.
“My name is Maya Rowan Mercer,” Maya spoke clearly, her voice steady, powerful, and utterly devoid of fear. “And I am not here for Elena’s estate. I am here for my daughter.”
Dr. Ross stood up abruptly, knocking her chair backward. “Security! Get this lunatic out of here!”
“Don't bother, Dr. Ross,” Adrian said coldly.
Adrian raised a single finger.
The side doors of the ballroom burst open. Twelve federal agents in dark windbreakers bearing the letters **FBI** stormed the room, led by the Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

“Dr. Catherine Ross? Victoria Vance?” the lead agent barked, flashing his badge. “You are both under arrest for federal human trafficking, conspiracy to commit medical fraud, and interstate kidnapping.”
