Chapter 8 - The Viper Strikes

Chaos erupted in the Plaza Hotel ballroom.
Socialites screamed and scrambled out of the way as federal agents swarmed the stage.
“This is an outrage!” Victoria screamed, backing toward the backstage curtain. “Do you know who my family is? My uncle sits on the state supreme court! You can't touch me!”
“Your uncle was arrested forty minutes ago at his home in Westchester, Miss Vance,” the lead FBI agent said, stepping up the stairs with a pair of steel handcuffs. “We have your encrypted cloud servers, Dr. Ross’s offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, and seven sworn affidavits from nurses at Crestview Memorial.”
Dr. Ross broke down immediately. She fell to her knees, sobbing hysterical confessions into the carpet: “It wasn't my idea! Elena came to me! She had a miscarriage at four months and refused to tell Adrian! She paid me two million dollars to find a replacement baby from the charity ward! Victoria knew everything! She helped me falsify the death certificates!”
Victoria’s eyes blazed with animalistic fury. She looked across the stage, past the approaching agents, and locked her gaze on Maya and Nora.
“You ruined my life!” Victoria shrieked.
With the desperate speed of a cornered predator, Victoria snatched a heavy silver champagne bucket from a nearby banquet table and lunged straight toward Maya and Nora.
“Maya, look out!” Adrian roared.
Maya didn't run. Her first and only instinct was to spin around, using her own body as a human shield to encase Nora. She braced for the impact, burying her face into her daughter’s curls.
The blow never landed.
Adrian intercepted Victoria mid-stride. He caught Victoria’s wrists with one hand, twisting them until she cried out in pain and dropped the silver bucket with a heavy clatter. With his other arm, Adrian shoved Victoria firmly back into the arms of two waiting FBI agents.
“Touch my family again,” Adrian whispered in a voice so freezing it stopped the breath in Victoria’s throat, “and I will ensure you spend the rest of your natural life in a supermax facility.”
The agents forced Victoria’s hands behind her back, the cold steel handcuffs clicking shut with finality. As she was dragged down the center aisle of the ballroom, past her former high-society friends who recoiled from her in disgust, Victoria wept tears of pure, impotent humiliation.
Nora, still tucked safely against Maya’s chest, patted Maya’s cheek with her soft little hand.
“Mommy okay?” Nora whispered, her sweet, clear voice cutting through the remaining tension in the room. “Daddy save us.”
Maya let out a shaky, joyful laugh, tears spilling over her eyelashes. She looked at Adrian, who was breathing hard, his tux slightly disheveled, looking at them both with a gaze full of raw, protective devotion.

“Yes, my angel,” Maya whispered, kissing Nora’s forehead. “Daddy saved us.”
