Chapter 12 - The Reckoning at Midnight

The silence that followed was suffocating. Maya let out a tiny squeak in her sleep, nuzzling deeper into my chest, completely unaware that the family she had been born into was built on a foundation of rot.
"What do you mean she wasn't there?" Garrett scrambled up from the floor, his voice cracking with rising hysteria. "Oak Ridge is four hours upstate! Mom goes there twice a year! She tells Dad she’s doing volunteer church retreats in the mountains!"
"She hasn't been doing retreats," Claire said, snapping her briefcase shut with a sound like a gunshot. "The facility shut its residential wing down eighteen months ago due to state health violations. The state appointed emergency guardians for all wards. But Evelyn intervened before the court could reassign Gertrude. She signed Gertrude out into private home-care custody. And then... the paper trail went completely cold."
I stared at Claire, my stomach turning violently. "You think Evelyn hid her?"
"I know she did," Claire replied. "Because if the probate court found out Gertrude was no longer residing in an approved clinical facility, Evelyn would have lost her administrator status immediately. The monthly checks—ten thousand dollars a month, Garrett, which funded her luxury cars, her country club dues, and the manicures she taps against everyone’s tables—would have been frozen instantly. She needed Gertrude to remain an invisible ghost until she could replace her with your baby."
Garrett looked as though he were going to be violently ill. He gripped the edge of the rolling tray table, his knuckles turning porcelain white. "She lied to me. Every single day of my life. When I was sixteen and needed tuition for prep school, she told me the family had fallen on hard times. When Stella and I got engaged, she told us she couldn't help with the wedding because she had sacrificed everything for Claire and me."
"She sacrificed nothing," Claire said, without an ounce of sympathy for her brother. "She discarded Gertrude the way she discarded me the moment I refused to let her control my life. And now she tried to do the exact same thing to Stella and this innocent girl."
The door to Room 304 tapped open softly. Chloe slipped inside, carrying two large insulated coffee tumblers and a heavy legal envelope under her arm. When she saw Claire standing beside my bed, she paused, her eyes assessing the newcomer with sharp caution.
"Stella," Chloe said quietly, stepping between Claire and the bed. "Who is this?"
"This is Claire," I said, breathing out a ragged sigh of relief. "Garrett’s sister."
Chloe’s eyebrows shot upward. "The sister who vanished?"
"The sister who came back with receipts," Claire corrected smoothly, extending a manicured hand toward Chloe. "You must be Chloe Davenport. Stella told me about you when I called her two weeks ago."
Garrett jerked his head up, staring at me in total betrayal. "You... you talked to Claire two weeks ago? Before Sunday dinner? Before the party?"
May you like
"The very second I found out what your mother was planning," I said coldly, looking Garrett dead in the eye. "Did you really think I’d sit back and let your mother steamroll my life while you nodded along like an obedient puppy? I prepared for war, Garrett. And unlike you, I chose the side that protects our child."
