Chapter 15 - The Vanishing Heir

"You lied to all of us," Garrett said, standing up from his chair. His voice didn't waver this time. It was flat, empty, and devoid of the deference he had carried for thirty years. "You used Dad. You used Claire. You used me. And you tried to use my daughter."

Evelyn backed away from her husband’s grip, her eyes wild, darting between the four of us like a caged animal looking for an escape hatch.

"She wasn't normal, Arthur!" Evelyn screamed, her voice turning high and piercing, echoing down the pristine hospital wing. "She was broken! She would have ruined our standing! The Vances don't raise defectives! I did what had to be done to keep the money in our line! Grandfather was a fool to leave it to an idiot!"

"Shut up," Arthur whispered, tears streaming down his weathered cheeks. "Just shut your mouth."

Claire stepped away from the window, unbuttoning her trench coat to reveal an active recording application running on her phone, displaying the flashing green light of state legal compliance under single-party consent.

"Thank you, Mother," Claire said, her finger tapping the screen to end the recording. "That confession just completed the criminal wire fraud package. The state police have already dispatched a team to Martha Vance's residence in Pine Crest."

Evelyn suddenly stopped breathing. Her head snapped toward Claire, her eyes widening in pure, paralyzed terror.

"No," Evelyn breathed. "No, you didn't."

"They're on their way right now," Claire said coldly. "To retrieve Gertrude and bring her to protective medical custody."

A terrible, unnatural smile crept across Evelyn's pale, trembling lips. It was the smile of someone who had lost her mind, someone whose final defense mechanism had shattered into absolute madness.

"Then they're going to have a very long drive for nothing, Claire," Evelyn whispered, a low, guttural chuckle bubbling up from her throat.

The air in the room instantly turned to subzero ice.

Claire stepped forward, her calm façade slipping for the first time. "What did you say?"

"Martha called me from Pine Crest at seven this morning," Evelyn hissed, leaning her head back against the doorframe, her eyes glinting with venomous triumph. "Before your precious little restraining order was even stamped. Gertrude isn't there."

"Where is she, Evelyn?" Garrett shouted, lunging forward until Arthur grabbed his arm. "Where did you put her?!"

"I didn't put her anywhere," Evelyn mocked softly, her eyes locking straight onto mine, drilling into my core with venomous hatred. "She walked out into the woods behind the property during the thunderstorm last night. The back door was left unlocked. Nobody knows where she went. The sheriff in Pine Crest found her medical bracelet caught in the barbed wire along the interstate three hours ago."

Before anyone could speak, before the horror could settle into our lungs, the emergency red alert system on the corridor wall outside flashed to life with a sharp, piercing chime.

A nurse burst through the doorway, her face dead white.

"Dr. Martinez! We have an unidentified Jane Doe just admitted through the pediatric ER trauma bay—adult female, non-verbal, severe hypothermia, found collapsed on the hospital access ramp ten minutes ago!"

Evelyn’s breath hitched in her throat, her face draining of every drop of blood as she collapsed backward into her husband's arms.
