Chapter 7 - The Waiting Room Siege

"What do you mean she's restricted?"
Garrett’s voice, raw and ragged with panic, echoed through the quiet waiting area of the third-floor maternity ward.
Through the thick, soundproof double doors of Room 304, I couldn't hear him, but Chloe had stepped out into the hallway five minutes after the delivery to grab ice chips, and she witnessed the entire spectacle.
Garrett was standing at the nurses' security station in his rumpled work polo, his hair wild from driving with the windows down, his face flushed an angry, blotchy red. Right beside him, marching like a five-star general reviewing troops, was Evelyn.
Evelyn was wearing her cream-colored cashmere cardigan, clutching a large designer tote bag stuffed with heirloom tissue paper. In her right hand, she carried the white velvet blanket with **Gertrude** embroidered across the corner in thick gold thread.
"Excuse me, young lady," Evelyn was saying, leaning over the counter and tapping a polished acrylic nail against the laminated acrylic partition. "I am Evelyn Vance. This is my son, Garrett Vance. His wife is in this ward. We were notified by a neighbor that an ambulance came down their street hours ago. You will buzz us through immediately."
The charge nurse on duty, a woman named Beverly whose name badge carried pins for twenty-five years of labor and delivery service, didn't even look up from her monitor.
"Names?" Beverly asked dryly.
"I just gave you our names!" Evelyn snapped, her voice escalating to a theatrical pitch. "Stella Vance is having my granddaughter! We have family waiting in the parking lot! We have photographer appointments booked!"
"Patient Stella Vance," Beverly read from the screen, her eyes tracing the digital file. She clicked her mouse once. Twice. Her expression shifted into concrete. "Patient has activated Code Amber privacy protocols. Strict confidential registration."
"She what?" Garrett blurted, stepping forward and gripping the edge of the desk. "I'm her husband! Look at the insurance! I'm the primary policyholder! You can't keep me out of my own wife’s delivery room!"
"Sir," Beverly said, folding her hands calmly on top of the counter, "under state medical privacy statutes and hospital policy, the laboring mother is the sole patient. Her health directives override all visitor requests, regardless of marital or familial relationship. Your name is listed on the directive under 'Conditional Access — Phase Two.'"
"What does conditional access mean?" Evelyn demanded, her chest heaving beneath the cashmere. "Garrett, do not stand there and let this bureaucrat talk to you like this! Demand to see the chief of staff!"
"It means," Beverly continued, completely immune to Evelyn's tone, "that the patient will be asked if she consents to visitors once she is safely transferred to postpartum recovery. Until then, you may take a seat in the waiting area near the elevators. If you cause a disturbance, hospital security will escort you to the street."
Two security guards in dark tactical uniforms appeared at the end of the hall, their hands resting loosely at their utility belts. They didn't move toward Garrett, but their presence was unmistakable.
Garrett backed up half a step, his breath hitching. He pulled out his phone, staring at the screen.
"She planned this," he whispered, the realization finally breaking through his thick skull. "She didn't call me when her water broke. She didn't call when the contractions started. She had Chloe drive her."
"Don't be ridiculous, Garrett!" Evelyn hissed, grabbing his elbow with iron fingers. "She’s just being hysterical! Hormonal! I told you she was unstable when she refused the nursery paint we selected! The moment that child is born, she’ll come to her senses. We have the venue deposit paid! The minister is coming by at noon!"
Across the corridor, Chloe leaned casually against the ice machine, holding a paper cup. She caught Garrett’s eye.
Garrett froze. "Chloe? Chloe, is she okay? Has the baby come? Tell me right now!"
Chloe slowly raised the cup of ice chips, took a single sip, and looked Garrett up and down with cold pity.
"She’s fine, Garrett," Chloe said softly. "Better than she’s ever been in her life."
"Let me in there!" Garrett stepped toward her, but one of the security guards immediately shifted forward, placing a broad shoulder in Garrett's path.
"Sir. Back to the waiting area. Now."
"Is it a girl?" Evelyn called out, her voice suddenly sweet, dripping with that sickening, manipulative charm she used on church committees. "Chloe, dear, you know how much this child means to our family. Just tell us she's healthy. Tell us little Gertrude is safe."
Chloe looked straight into Evelyn’s eyes. A slow, venomous smile spread across Chloe's lips.
"The baby is perfectly healthy, Evelyn," Chloe said, turning her back on them and pushing open the heavy magnetic door back into Room 304. "And you should probably save that blanket for a dog."

The magnetic lock clicked shut with a sound like a vault closing.
