Chapter 4 - Touchdown in ParadiseThe tires slammed onto the asphalt of the Cancun runway with a loud thud and a cloud of burnt rubber. Reverse thrusters roared, pushing passengers forward against their seatbelts.

Outside the window, the bright tropical sun burned against the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, illuminating the pristine white buildings of the airport terminal. Paradise had arrived. But for Ryan Carter, the heat was about to become unbearable.

As the plane taxied to the gate, the cabin erupted in the usual flurry of activity—seatbelts clicking, overhead bins opening, people eager to stretch their legs.

Ryan didn't stand up. He waited until the rest of the passengers cleared out, holding Ashley back by her wrist despite her visible agitation.

"Ryan, let me go!" Ashley whined, pulling her heavy handbag over her shoulder. "Everyone is staring at us! I want to get to the hotel!"

"Shut up for once, Ashley!" Ryan snapped, his composure completely shattered. He stood up, towering over the empty seats, and marched straight toward the forward galley where I was finishing my post-flight paperwork.

"Valerie," he growled, stepping into the tight space. "Enough with the games. What is this? How did you know I was on this flight?"

I didn't look up from my clipboard. "I didn't know, Ryan. It was a scheduling realignment. A stroke of incredible luck. Or karma, depending on how you choose to view it."

"Karma?" He let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh. "You think this is funny? You humiliated me in front of first class!"

"You humiliated yourself the moment you brought your mistress onto my aircraft using our joint airline reward miles," I said, finally raising my eyes to meet his.

Ryan froze. His chest bounced heavily as he tried to construct a lie. "She... she’s a client! Ashley is a corporate consultant for the new hotel project in Quintana Roo!"

From behind him, Ashley entered the galley, her mouth agape. "A client?! Ryan, you told me we were going on a romantic vacation! You told me you loved me!"

"Ashley, stay out of this!" Ryan bellowed, spinning around to face her. "I'm trying to fix this!"

"Fix what?!" Ashley shouted back, her voice echoing in the empty jet bridge. "Fix the fact that you lied to me about your divorce? You told me you were already living in separate bedrooms!"

"We are living in separate bedrooms!" Ryan lied desperately.

"We slept in the same bed yesterday morning, Ryan," I interjected calmly, handing my clipboard to my co-worker, Sarah, who had stepped out of the cockpit and was watching the drama unfold with folded arms and an icy glare. "And you kissed me goodbye on the cheek before leaving for your 'Austin business trip.'"

Ashley gasped, clutching her chest. "You absolute bastard!"

"Valerie, please," Ryan turned back to me, his tone shifting back to a pathetic whine. "Can we just go to the airport lounge and talk about this like adults? We can work this out. I’ll send Ashley back to Dallas on the next flight. Just... don't do anything crazy."

"Crazy?" I chuckled softly, adjusting the collar of my navy blazer. "Oh, Ryan. I’m not going to do anything crazy. In fact, I’m not going to do anything at all. Everything has already been done."

He stared at me, a cold sweat breaking out across his neck. "What do you mean?"

"I mean your phone is about to reconnect to cellular service," I said, pointing toward the window. "I suggest you turn off airplane mode."
