Chapter 5 - The UnravelingRyan frantically pulled his iPhone from his pocket and toggled off airplane mode.

For three seconds, nothing happened. Then, the device began to vibrate hysterically in his hand.
A barrage of notifications flooded his screen like a burst dam. Text messages, missed calls, emails, and bank alerts chimed in a deafening, continuous rhythm.
Ping. Ping. Ping. Ping.
Ryan’s thumb swiped across the screen, his eyes wildly tracking the messages.
"What... what is this?" he stammered, his voice dropping an octave into pure terror.
"Read them aloud, Ryan," I suggested gently. "Share with the class."
His hands began to shake so violently he nearly dropped the phone. "My... my corporate bank accounts. They’re frozen?"
"Temporary injunction," I explained smoothly. "Filed in the Dallas County District Court at nine o'clock this morning by my attorney, Mr. Harrison. Since you used corporate funds to purchase luxury items, vacations, and jewelry for non-business associates—namely Miss Ashley here—the court deemed it necessary to lock all liquid assets pending a full forensic audit."
"You... you froze my business accounts?!" Ryan screamed, his face turning an unhealthy shade of purple. "I have payroll due on Friday! I have vendors to pay!"
"Then I suggest you liquidize some of those expensive watches you like to show off," I replied without a trace of pity.
"Wait!" Ashley interjected, stepping between us, her voice high and panicked. "What about the resort reservation? The ocean-view suite? The VIP package? You paid for that with your card, right Ryan?"
Ryan tapped frantically on his screen, opening his email app. A fresh notification appeared at the top of his inbox.
Reservation Cancelled: Grand Velas Riviera Maya.
"It's... it's cancelled," Ryan whispered, staring at the screen in complete horror. "My card was declined for the pre-authorization deposit."
"Oh, I took care of that," I added helpfully. "Since the reservation was booked using our joint credit card, I logged in during our layover in Dallas and cancelled it. You no longer have a room. Nor do you have a rental car."
Ashley let out a shriek of rage. "You told me this trip was completely paid for! You told me we were staying in a five-star villa!"
"It was paid for!" Ryan yelled back, grabbing his hair. "She destroyed it!"
"No, Ryan," I corrected him firmly, stepping closer so that I was standing mere inches from his face. "You destroyed it the moment you decided to treat your marriage like a game you could cheat on without consequences. You thought I was weak because I stayed quiet. But quiet people pay attention. Quiet people gather evidence. And quiet people wait for the exact right moment to take control."
Ryan looked at me, truly seeing me for the first time in nine years. The timid, submissive woman he thought he owned was gone. Standing before him was an intelligent, composed, and dangerous woman who had dismantled his entire life in less than three hours.

"Valerie..." he choked out, tears finally welling in his eyes. "Please... don't do this to me."
"Your bags are being offloaded at baggage claim four," I said, stepping past him toward the exit door. "I suggest you grab them before someone else does. Goodbye, Ryan."
