Chapter 6 - Stranded in ParadiseThe heat of Cancun hit Ryan the moment he stepped out of the air-conditioned terminal and onto the crowded curb.

It was ninety-two degrees, with humidity so thick it felt like breathing warm soup. Dust, diesel fumes, and the chatter of hundreds of tourists filled the air.

Beside him stood Ashley, her pristine blonde hair already frizzing in the tropical moisture, sitting atop her massive pink suitcase and sobbing loudly into her hands.

"I can't believe this!" Ashley wailed, drawing stares from taxi drivers and hotel greeters. "My hair is ruined! My vacation is ruined! And you don't even have enough money to get us a cab!"

"Will you shut up for two minutes?!" Ryan screamed, wiping sweat from his forehead. His white linen shirt was now damp and crumpled, sticking to his back. "I’m trying to call my lawyer!"

He held his phone to his ear, pacing frantically on the sidewalk.

"Pick up, Mark... pick up..." Ryan muttered under his breath.

"Ryan?" his attorney's voice finally came through the speaker, sounding exhausted and stern. "Where the hell are you?"

"I’m in Mexico!" Ryan shouted into the phone. "Mark, what the hell is happening?! My accounts are frozen! My cards are getting declined! Valerie has gone crazy!"

"Valerie hasn't gone crazy, Ryan," Mark replied coldly. "She’s been very smart. Her attorney served us with a temporary restraining order and a petition for divorce at eight-thirty this morning. They have everything, Ryan."

"Everything?" Ryan’s voice broke.

"They have the bank statements from your private account in the Caymans. They have the receipts for the jewelry you bought for Ashley. They have phone records, hotel stays, and flight logs. The judge signed an order freezing all marital and corporate assets until we can account for the funds you misappropriated."

Ryan felt his knees give out. He sank down onto the concrete curb, uncaring that his expensive trousers were getting filthy. "Mark... I don't have any cash on me. I have fifty dollars in my wallet. How am I supposed to pay for a hotel? How am I supposed to get home?"

"I suggest you ask your friend Ashley to use her credit card," Mark said bluntly. "Because until the emergency court hearing on Monday, you don't have access to a single dime. And Ryan? If I were you, I'd get on the first flight back to Texas. If you miss that court date, the judge will hand her the house, the company, and everything else you own."

The call went dead.

Ryan sat on the curb, the hot tropical sun beating down on his neck. He looked over at Ashley, who was staring at him with a look of pure disgust.

"Well?" Ashley demanded, crossing her arms. "What did he say? Are we going to the resort or not?"

"I... I don't have any money, Ashley," Ryan confessed, looking down at his dust-covered loafers. "My cards are useless."

"Are you serious?!" Ashley stood up, her eyes flashing with anger. "You brought me all the way to Mexico without any money?! You told me you were a millionaire!"

"I am a millionaire!" Ryan yelled, desperate to defend his bruised ego. "It’s just... it’s temporarily locked!"

"I don't care!" Ashley snapped, grabbing her suitcase handle. "I’m not spending four days sitting in a cheap airport motel with a broke, lying middle-aged man! I’m buying my own ticket back to Dallas!"

"Ashley, wait!" Ryan called out, reaching for her arm.

"Don't touch me!" she shouted, pulling away. "I’m calling my ex-boyfriend to pick me up at the airport when I land!"

She spun on her high heels and marched back into the terminal, leaving Ryan completely alone on the curb, surrounded by diesel smoke and staring at fifty dollars in cash.
