Chapter 3 - The Uninvited Guests(Length: ~1800 words)

The heavy oak front door swung open, and David stepped into the grand entryway, adjusting his collar, a fake smile plastered across his face.

"Samuel?" David said, forcing a warm, welcoming tone into his voice as he looked at the silver-haired attorney standing on the porch. "What are you doing here so late? Is there news about the medical trust?"

Samuel Vance didn't return the smile. His face was carved from granite, his dark eyes sharp and utterly devoid of warmth.

"Good evening, David," Samuel said, stepping past him into the marble foyer without waiting for an invitation.

Behind Samuel walked two senior detectives from the State Police Homicide Division—Detective Miller, a broad-shouldered veteran with a stern jaw, and Detective Ramirez, a sharp-eyed forensics specialist carrying a silver evidence briefcase.

David’s smile faltered, his posture stiffening instantly as he saw the uniforms and the badges pinned to their belts.

"I... I don't understand," David stammered, taking a step back. "Why are the police here? Has something happened?"

"We are here executing a court-issued search warrant, Mr. Vance," Detective Miller announced, holding up a blue folder signed by a State Supreme Court judge. "Regarding the ongoing investigation into the attempted murder and illegal poisoning of Eleanor Hayes."

David’s breath hitched in his throat. His eyes darted nervously toward the staircase leading up to my bedroom, then back to the officers.

"Attempted murder?!" David gasped, his voice cracking into a high, hysterical register. "Are you out of your mind?! My wife is dying of a rare autoimmune disease! I’ve been caring for her hand and foot for four months! Who gave you this ridiculous idea?!"

"A certified forensic toxicology report," Samuel Vance said smoothly, pulling a thick document from his leather coat. "Alongside four months of continuous high-definition video and audio recordings captured inside this residence."

Down the hallway, the sound of heels clicking rapidly against the marble floor echoed through the house.

Jessica stepped out from the dining room, holding her glass of champagne, her face flushed with confusion. "David? What’s taking so long? Who are these people?"

Detective Ramirez immediately turned to Jessica, her eyes scanning her crimson dress and the heavy diamond necklace around her neck.

"Are you Jessica Reed?" Detective Ramirez asked sharply.

Jessica blinked, taken aback by the aggressive tone. "Yes... who wants to know?"

"You are currently named as an active co-conspirator in an ongoing capital murder investigation," Detective Ramirez stated, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her utility belt. "Step away from the suspect and place your hands behind your back."

Jessica dropped her champagne glass. The crystal shattered violently against the marble floor, splashing sparkling wine across her designer heels.

"What?!" Jessica shrieked, backing away toward the dining table. "David! What is she talking about?! Tell them who I am! I’m just the interior designer!"

"Interior designers don't usually measure windows for post-funeral drapes while the homeowner is still breathing, Miss Reed," Samuel Vance interjected coldly, stepping forward. "We have the audio recording from the master bedroom twenty minutes ago. Every word you and David spoke beside Eleanor's bed was transmitted live to a secure police server."

Jessica turned ghost-white. She looked at David with pure, hysterical fury. "You told me she was deaf and blind! You said she was a brain-dead vegetable!"

"Shut up, Jessica!" David screamed, his cool composure shattering into sheer panic. He turned back to Detective Miller, his hands raised defenselessly. "Detective, listen to me! This is a massive misunderstanding! My wife is delusional! She's taking heavy medications that make her hallucinate! Whatever video you think you have, it's digital manipulation! I love my wife!"

"If you love your wife, Mr. Vance," Detective Miller said, pulling out his own set of handcuffs, "then you won't mind explaining why the State Financial Crimes Unit just intercepted your attempt to transfer five hundred thousand dollars to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands ten minutes ago."

David froze. His mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out.

"And perhaps," Samuel added with a lethal, predatory smile, "you'd like to explain why the real estate trust holding this twelve-million-dollar estate was transferred out of your reach six months ago."

"What... what are you talking about?" David whimpered, his knees visibly shaking. "I'm her husband! I'm the primary beneficiary in her will!"

Samuel pulled a second document from his coat—a certified decree bearing the gold seal of the State Surrogate Court.

"The dummy will you found in the study safe was a falsified document created to monitor your intentions, David," Samuel revealed. "Eleanor’s real estate, her international architecture firm, her industrial patents, and her liquid assets worth two point four billion dollars are fully protected under The Eleanor Hayes Revocable Trust."

"Two... two point four billion?" David gasped out loud, his eyes widening in absolute, horrifying shock.

Jessica stopped screaming, staring at David with open-mouthed horror. "Billion?! You told me she had fifteen million!"

David didn't hear her. His mind was spinning out of control. He had spent four months slowly poisoning his wife for what he thought was a comfortable inheritance, completely unaware that he was standing on the edge of a multi-billion-dollar empire that he would never touch.

"Under the terms of Eleanor's actual estate planning," Samuel continued mercilessly, "in the event of your criminal indictment for spousal abuse or attempted murder, your marital rights are severed instantly. You are entitled to exactly one dollar—which will be mailed to your state prison facility."

"No... no! This isn't happening!" David roared, suddenly lunging toward the front door in a desperate, blind attempt to flee!

"Suspect is fleeing!" Detective Miller shouted.

Before David could reach the porch, two uniformed officers standing outside stepped into his path, grabbing his arms and slamming his body face-down onto the cold marble floor of the foyer!

CLICK-CLACK.

The steel handcuffs locked tightly around David’s wrists.

"David Vance, you are under arrest for attempted premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit murder, illegal administration of controlled toxic substances, and grand financial fraud," Detective Miller barked, dragging David up to his knees.

Jessica tried to bolt toward the back terrace door, but Detective Ramirez cut her off instantly, twisting her arms behind her back and clicking the second pair of handcuffs around her manicured wrists.

"Let go of me! I didn't poison anyone!" Jessica screamed, sobbing hysterically as she was pulled toward the front entrance. "It was David! He planned everything! He bought the chemicals! I was just hanging curtains!"

"You'll have plenty of time to explain that to the grand jury, Miss Reed," Samuel Vance said coldly as the officers dragged both of them toward the waiting police cruisers outside.

Inside the quiet master bedroom upstairs, I watched the entire arrest unfold live on my eye-tracking tablet.

I slowly sat up in bed, swinging my legs over the edge of the mattress.

The poison was gone from my system. The nightmare was over.

I stood up on my own two feet, smoothed down my robe, and walked toward the bedroom window, looking down at the red and blue emergency lights flashing across the stone driveway.

David was pushed into the back seat of the lead police cruiser. Just before the officer closed the door, David lifted his head, his eyes catching my silhouette standing strong and tall in the second-floor window.

His face contorted in sheer, unadulterated terror as he realized the truth:

I had never been his victim. I had been his judge.
