Chapter 6 - The Trial of David Vance(Length: ~1800 words)

Three months later.

The main sentencing hall of the State Supreme Court was packed to capacity. Over two hundred journalists, high-society figures, and legal observers filled the wooden gallery benches.

Sitting at the defense table in a bright orange county jail jumpsuit, handcuffed at his wrists and ankles, was David Vance.

His polished, handsome appearance was completely destroyed. His hair was cropped short, his face hollow and pale, and his hands trembled continuously as he stared down at the dark wood table in front of him. Beside him sat his public defender—his former high-priced defense lawyers had abandoned him the moment his bank accounts were frozen.

Sitting across the room at the prosecution table, wearing a breathtaking cream wool suit with her dark hair styled elegantly, was Eleanor Hayes. She looked radiant, strong, and completely healthy, flanked by Samuel Vance and the lead State Prosecutor.

In the witness box sat Jessica Reed, wearing a simple navy prison dress, crying softly as she read her sworn testimony into the record.

"David told me his wife was going to die within weeks," Jessica wept into the microphone, her voice echoing off the high stone walls. "He showed me the chemicals he was putting in her soup... he told me we were going to be rich... I... I didn't know it was attempted murder... I thought he was just speeding up the natural process..."

"Objection!" David’s public defender muttered weakly.

"Overruled," Judge Evelyn Harris stated sternly from the elevated bench.

After three hours of overwhelming physical, digital, and forensic testimony, the prosecution rested its case.

Judge Harris looked down from the bench at David Vance.

"Mr. Vance," Judge Harris declared, her voice dripping with absolute, cold severity. "In my thirty years on the judicial bench, I have rarely witnessed an act of such monstrous, calculated cruelty. You took a vow to cherish and protect your wife. Instead, you systematically poisoned her day after day, laughing with your mistress beside her bed while measuring her room for post-funeral drapes."

David lowered his head onto the table, dry, hysterical sobs shaking his shoulders.

"It is the sentence of this court," Judge Harris announced, slamming her heavy wooden gavel down, "that you, David Vance, be remanded to the State Department of Corrections to serve a term of LIFE IMPRISONMENT without the possibility of parole. Furthermore, under the Civil Restitution Act, all marital property claims are severed, and you are ordered to pay complete legal fees to the victim's estate."

CRACK!

The gavel echoed through the silent courtroom like a thunderclap.

Two armed sheriff's deputies grabbed David by his orange jumpsuit, dragging him to his feet. As he was marched past the prosecution table toward the holding cells, David turned his head, his eyes catching Eleanor’s gaze one last time.

He looked at her with eyes filled with complete, total ruin, pleading silently for a single drop of mercy.

Eleanor didn't flinch. She sat tall, her posture immaculate, looking straight through him as if he were made of glass.

He had tried to erase her voice. Instead, he had written his own life sentence.
