Chapter 5 - The Red Stain"Oh, my God!" Claire gasped, springing up from her chair so fast her napkin fell to the floor. "I'm so sorry! I'm so clumsy!"

"It's completely fine," I said calmly, not moving a muscle as the red wine soaked into the fabric. "Accidents happen all the time in this house."
Owen quickly pulled several cloth napkins from his lap, trying to dab at the spill. "Claire, babe, are you okay? You're shaking."
"I'm fine!" Claire squeaked out, her voice two octaves higher than normal. She wouldn't look at me. She wouldn't look at Damon. Her eyes were fixed on the wine stain. "I... I just felt a dizzy spell."
Damon stood up, his face pale, his jaw set so tight I could see the muscles pulsing near his ear. "I'll get a towel from the kitchen."
"Don't worry, Damon," I said smoothly, staying seated. "I'll get it. After all, I know where everything is kept in my home."
I stood up slowly, giving Damon a long, cold look as I passed his chair. He stared back at me, his eyes filled with a sudden, horrifying realization: She knows.
I walked into the kitchen, retrieved a roll of paper towels, and returned to the dining room.
Claire was still standing, clutching her purse against her waist as if it were a shield. "Owen... I think we should go. My stomach is feeling really upset."
"Go?" Owen asked, looking up from the table in confusion. "Babe, we haven't even had dessert yet. Are you sure?"
"Yes! I need to go home right now!" Claire insisted, her voice tight with rising panic.
"If Claire isn't feeling well, Owen, you should definitely take her home," I said sweetly, setting the paper towels on the table. "We wouldn't want her collapsing here. She has so much to prepare for—the wedding, the financial audits, the honeymoon..."
Claire looked like she was about to throw up right there on the dining room rug. She didn't wait for Owen. She turned on her designer heels and hurried toward the front door without saying another word.
Owen looked deeply embarrassed. "Emily, Damon... I'm so sorry. I don't know what's gotten into her lately. She's been super stressed about the wedding planning."
"It's completely understandable, Owen," I said, putting a gentle hand on his arm. "Planning a wedding with the wrong person can be very exhausting."
Owen blinked, looking slightly confused by my wording, but he offered a warm nod. "Thanks for dinner, Em. I'll call you tomorrow, Damon."
"Yeah... call me tomorrow, man," Damon muttered, his voice barely audible.
The moment the front door clicked shut behind Owen and Claire, the silence inside our house became heavy and suffocating.
Damon turned around slowly, standing near the dining room table, staring at the ruined white tablecloth. The charming, confident real estate developer was completely gone. In his place was a cornered, desperate man.
"What was that, Emily?" he asked, his tone dropping into a dangerous, low register. "What kind of game are you playing?"
I walked over to the side credenza, picked up my glass of ice water, and took a slow, deliberate sip.
"I'm not playing a game, Damon," I said softly.
"You mentioned Nevis! You mentioned Claire's camisole!" he yelled, stepping toward me, his hands clenched into fists at his sides. "You did that on purpose to embarrass her in front of Owen!"
"I didn't embarrass her, Damon," I said, looking him dead in the eye without flinching. "She embarrassed herself when she left her underwear under my bed while I was at the clinic listening to our daughter's heartbeat."
Damon stopped dead in his tracks.
The room went deathly quiet. The only sound was the ticking of the grandfather clock in the foyer.
His face went through three distinct transformations in five seconds: denial, shock, and finally, absolute terror.
"Emily..." he stammered, his voice suddenly weak. "Emily, wait... it... it's not what you think—"
"Save it," I cut him off, my voice as cold as glacier ice. "Don't insult my intelligence again. You've been doing that for two years."
"Two years?" he whispered, his eyes widening.
"I know about the coastal fund," I continued, taking a step toward him. "I know about the six hundred thousand dollars you moved into the Nevis shell account. I know about the offshore gambling debts, and I know you forged my signature on the secondary loan guarantees."
Damon stumbled backward, hitting the edge of the dining table. The color completely drained from his face.
"Emily... please," he begged, reaching out his hands toward me. "Listen to me! I was in deep with some bad people! I was trying to fix it! Claire was just helping me manage the accounts—"
"Claire was hiding in my closet behind my maternity coats yesterday morning, Damon!" I shouted, my voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Is that how she helps you manage accounts?!"
Damon pulled his hands back, dropping them to his sides, completely speechless.
"Here's what's going to happen," I said, my tone shifting back into a terrifying, quiet calm. "You are going to sleep in the guest room tonight. You are not going to touch me, you are not going to call Claire, and you are not going to touch a single bank account."

"Emily, we can fix this..." he whimpered.
"No, Damon," I said, touching my pregnant stomach. "You fixed your fate yesterday morning. Now I'm fixing mine."
