Chapter 6 - The Trap is SetThat night, Damon slept in the guest room at the far end of the hallway. I locked the master bedroom door from the inside, sat at my desk, and worked until three in the morning alongside Marcus Vance via encrypted video call.

"We have everything we need on the financial fraud side, Emily," Marcus said, scrolling through the uploaded banking spreadsheets on his dual monitors. "Damon's forgery of your signature on the three-million-dollar umbrella liability policy is a federal felony. The moment we file this with the State Attorney General, his real estate license is revoked instantly."

"What about Owen's capital?" I asked, sipping warm chamomile tea.

"Owen's money is currently sitting in the holding account in Nevis," Marcus explained. "Damon scheduled the final offshore transfer for this Friday at 5:00 PM. He thinks he's home free."

"Can we freeze the Nevis account before Friday?"

"We can do better than that," Marcus smiled, a sharp, wolfish expression crossing his face. "Because Damon used your forged signature as the primary administrative authority on the shell company's articles of incorporation, you legally own fifty percent of the holding entity. Tomorrow morning, we execute a legal administrative transfer, moving the entire six hundred thousand dollars into an independent escrow account under Owen's name."

"And Damon won't see it coming?"

"He won't know a thing until he tries to execute the transfer on Friday afternoon," Marcus confirmed. "He'll be staring at a zero balance."

"Perfect," I said. "Now, what about the divorce and custody filing?"

"I have the papers drafted," Marcus said, pulling up a blue-bordered document on his screen. "Full legal and physical custody of your daughter, exclusive possession of the marital home, seventy percent of all liquid marital assets, and full indemnification from all debts accrued by Damon's firm."

"Send them to my printer," I said. "I'll serve him myself."

The next morning, Thursday, Damon walked into the kitchen at 7:30 AM looking like a ghost. Dark circles hollowed out his eyes, his suit was rumpled, and he hovered near the doorway as if afraid to step onto my floor.

"Emily..." he began cautiously. "I called my lawyer this morning."

"Good," I said, sitting at the kitchen island, taking a bite of whole-wheat toast. "Save him the trip. He's going to need all the sleep he can get for Friday."

"What happens on Friday?" Damon asked, his voice trembling.

"On Friday, Owen is holding a board meeting for his investment group at his downtown office," I said, looking up at him. "He invited you and Claire to present the final quarterly returns."

Damon's posture went rigid. "I... I can't go to that meeting, Emily! I haven't finalized the returns!"

"Oh, you're going to that meeting, Damon," I said, setting my toast down. "Because if you don't show up, Marcus Vance files the federal forgery charges with the Police Department at 9:00 AM tomorrow."

Damon swallowed hard, his throat making a dry, raspy sound. "You're forcing me into a room with Owen?"

"Owen deserves the truth, Damon," I said softly. "You stole his inheritance while sleeping with his fiancée. Did you really think you were going to walk away into the sunset with his money and my life?"

Damon stared at me, panic wild in his eyes. "Emily, please... if Owen finds out, he'll destroy my firm! He has connections with every commercial developer in the city!"

"Then you better start practicing your apology," I replied calmly.

My phone chimed on the granite counter. A text message from Claire.

Claire: "Emily, I am so, so sorry about last night. I've been so overwhelmed with wedding stress. Can we please meet for coffee today? Just the two of us?"

I looked at the message, a cold, sharp smile touching my lips.

I typed back: “Of course, Claire. I'd love to get coffee. Meet me at the café on 5th at 1:00 PM.”

I looked up at Damon, who was watching me with mounting horror.

"Where are you going?" he asked.

"I'm going to have coffee with my best friend," I said, standing up and grabbing my coat. "We have so much to catch up on."
