Chapter 8 - The ConfrontationFriday afternoon, 3:45 PM.

The executive boardroom on the thirty-second floor of the Vance & Sterling engineering tower downtown looked out over the glittering city skyline.

Owen sat at the head of the long glass table, wearing a dark navy suit. He looked confused, reviewing a thin paper file that Marcus Vance's legal courier had delivered to his assistant an hour prior.

The heavy mahogany doors opened.

Damon walked in first. He wore a sharp black suit, but his tie was slightly crooked, his skin sickly pale, sweat glistening along his hairline.

Right behind him came Claire. She wore a dark grey dress, her eyes red and puffy behind heavy concealer, keeping her head low as she stepped into the room.

"Damon? Claire?" Owen stood up, looking between the two of them with deep confusion. "What's going on? Emily's lawyer called my office and said we needed to hold an emergency investment review today."

Damon swallowed hard, opening his leather briefcase with trembling fingers. "Owen... look, man... there's been a major technical issue with the coastal development fund—"

"Don't lie to him, Damon," my voice echoed from the doorway.

Everyone turned.

I walked into the boardroom, flanked by Marcus Vance and two uniformed private security officers. I wore an elegant black maternity dress, my hair styled, holding a leather folder under my arm.

"Emily?" Owen gasped, stepping around the table. "What are you doing here? What is going on?"

"Sit down, Owen," I said gently, offering him a warm, sad smile. "You're going to want to take a seat for this."

Owen looked at Damon, then at Claire, who was staring at the carpet, tears silently leaking down her cheeks. A dark, terrible suspicion began to form in Owen's eyes. He slowly took his seat at the head of the table.

Marcus Vance stepped forward, setting a heavy binder in front of Owen.

"Mr. Vance," Marcus introduced himself smoothly. "I am Emily's legal counsel. What you have in front of you is a forensic audit of the Vance Coastal Development Fund spanning the last eighteen months."

Owen opened the binder, his eyes scanning the certified banking printouts. "These... these show transfers to a entity called 'Nevis Holdings LLC'."

"A shell company registered in the Caribbean," Marcus explained. "Owned entirely by your fiancé, Claire, and your real estate partner, Damon."

Owen froze. He looked up from the paper, his face turning paper-white. "What?"

He looked directly at Claire. "Claire? What is he talking about?"

Claire buried her face in her hands, letting out a muffled, agonizing sob. "Owen... I'm so sorry... I'm so sorry..."

"They didn't just steal eight hundred thousand dollars of your inheritance, Owen," I spoke up, my voice steady and clear. "They've been having an affair behind our backs for two years. In my house. In my bed."

Silence crashed over the thirty-second floor boardroom like a physical weight.

Owen stood up so fast his heavy leather executive chair slammed into the glass wall behind him with a deafening BANG.

"Is this true?" Owen roared, his voice shaking the glass windows. He stepped directly toward Damon, his chest heaving, fists clenched tight. "DAMON! IS THIS TRUE?!"

Damon backed up until his spine hit the doorframe, his hands raised in frantic surrender. "Owen! Please! Listen to me! It was Claire's idea! She wanted the money for the wedding! She said you wouldn't notice!"

"YOU SON OF A BITCH!" Owen screamed, lunging across the space.

The two security guards I had brought immediately stepped between Owen and Damon, holding Owen back as he thrattered in blind, furious rage.

"YOU SLEPT WITH MY FIANCÉE?!" Owen roared, tears of betrayal spilling over his eyes. "I TRUSTED YOU! I GAVE YOU MY FAMILY'S MONEY!"

"Owen, stop!" Claire shrieked, cowering near the corner of the room. "Please don't hurt him!"

"Get out," Owen gasped out, his voice cracking with pure agony as he stared at Claire. "Get your ring off your finger, leave your keys on my desk, and get the hell out of my building before I have you both arrested!"

"Owen, wait—" Claire wept, reaching for her ring.

"GET OUT!" Owen thundered.

Claire ripped the two-carat diamond ring off her finger, slammed it onto the glass table, and bolted out the boardroom doors into the elevator lobby, weeping hysterically.

Damon tried to follow her, but Marcus Vance stepped smoothly into his path, holding up a fresh white document.

"Not so fast, Damon," Marcus said calmly. "You have some papers to sign."
