Chapter 2 - The Shark’s ProposalThe silence in the penthouse boardroom was so absolute that I could hear the faint, steady hum of the climate-control system filtering the air forty floors above Park Avenue.

I didn't sit down immediately. My fingers hovered over the edge of the cream-colored confidential file that Gideon Ashford had pushed across the black-quartz table. The cardboard tab bore a label written in aggressive, sharp handwriting: PROJECT ICARUS – PRESTON VANCE LIQUIDATION STRATEGY.

“Mr. Ashford,” I managed to say, my voice sounding steadier than my trembling internal organs felt. “If this is about Preston’s internal equity vesting schedule, you should know that his partnership shares don't fully mature until the end of the fiscal quarter. Any interference from management could trigger a wrongful termination—'’

“Interference?” Gideon let out a short, dry laugh that held zero humor, stepping closer until I could see the fine, intelligent lines crinkling at the corners of his hazel eyes. “Vivian, I don’t interfere. I execute. And Preston Vance hasn't earned a single share of equity in this firm—he’s embezzled them.”

My head snapped up. “Embezzled?”

“Open the file,” Gideon commanded softly, his gaze dropping to my face with an intensity that made my pulse spike.

With reluctant fingers, I untied the red cotton string holding the folder shut and flipped back the heavy cover. The first page was not a standard corporate memo; it was an intricate, forensic flow chart detailing three years of shadow accounts, offshore shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands, and illicit wire transfers routed through dummy startups.

Every single transaction bore Preston’s digital signature, masking a systematic siphoning of capital away from Ashford & Sterling Capital and directly into a private venture fund owned jointly by Preston and... Cassidy Vaughn.

“He’s been playing a high-stakes shell game right under my nose,” Gideon explained, leaning against the edge of the quartz table, crossing his long legs at the ankle. “He assumed because I was focused on our European acquisitions that I wouldn't notice a few million dollars bleeding out of our tech-sector portfolio. But my compliance team doesn't miss discrepancies, Vivian. Especially not when they involve corporate espionage.”

I flipped to the next page, my breath hitching in my throat. There, attached to a high-resolution screenshot of a chat log, were messages between Preston and Cassidy discussing me.

‘Just endure her for six more weeks,’ Preston had typed to his mistress just last Tuesday. ‘Once the Founders’ Gala happens, she’ll be too humiliated by the backless dress code to show her scarred back in public. I’ll file for divorce on grounds of abandonment, freeze her access cards, and leave her with nothing while we take the entire portfolio to our new firm.’

The room tilted. Even though I had heard him talking to Cassidy in his office earlier that morning, seeing it laid out in cold, digital ink—the deliberate, methodical cruelty of his plan to destroy me—sent a freezing wave of adrenaline through my veins.

“He thinks he’s so smart,” I whispered, my voice dropping an octave as the numbness faded, replaced by a burning, incandescent fury. “He thinks because I survived a fire and hid my scars in shame that I’m paralyzed. He thinks I’ll just crawl away.”

“And will you?” Gideon asked, his hawk-like eyes narrowing slightly as he studied my expression, tracking the exact second my fear transformed into cold, calculated vengeance.

I closed the file folder with a sharp, definitive snap. I looked up, meeting Gideon’s gaze without flinching.

“No,” I said clearly. “I want him broken. I want his equity revoked, his illicit accounts frozen, his reputation shredded in the financial district, and his precious mistress standing by with nothing to inherit when the dust settles.”

A slow, approving smile touched the corners of Gideon’s mouth—a rare, dangerous expression that made him look every bit the apex predator Wall Street whispered about in hushed tones.

“That,” Gideon murmured, pushing a second, much thinner velvet box across the table toward me, “is the exact kind of ambition I like to see in my risk analysts. Now, let’s talk about the Founders’ Gala this coming Saturday night.”

I looked down at the velvet box. “The gala? With that backless dress code trap... I can’t possibly attend, Mr. Ashford. That’s playing right into their hands.”

“Nonsense,” Gideon replied, reaching out with long, elegant fingers to flip open the lid of the box.

Inside lay a masterpiece of textile engineering. It was a custom-made haute couture evening gown crafted from midnight-blue silk velvet that absorbed the light like the deep ocean. But as I leaned in closer, I saw the true genius of the design: the back was completely open, plunging low in a dramatic, sweeping V-shape designed to expose every single inch of my shoulders and upper spine.

However, woven intricately across the exposed silk lining and framing the daring cut of the dress were thousands of microscopic, hand-embroidered silver crystals and iridescent sequins arranged in a breathtaking, abstract pattern of phoenix wings. The brilliant, shimmering silver lacework cascaded down the spine, turning my keloid scars not into an object of horror or shame, but into the fiery, textured center of a magnificent work of art.

It didn't hide the burns. It weaponized them.

“I had our lead designer in Milan work around the clock for forty-eight hours once I intercepted that gala invitation,” Gideon said quietly, his voice dropping into a register that sent an unexpected, electric shiver down my spine. “You’re going to walk into that ballroom on my arm, Vivian. You are going to stand beside your husband and his little mistress, and you are going to shine so brightly that every flashbulb in New York will blind them.”
