Chapter 5 - The DescentThe silence in the ballroom stretched out, thick and suffocating, before a low, collective murmur of sheer astonishment rippled through the crowd.

“Good lord... who is that?”
“Isn't that Gideon Ashford? The Ashford & Sterling shark? I thought he never brought dates to public functions.”
“Look at her dress—look at the back! The way those silver crystals frame those textures... is that art, or is that—?”
“It’s couture. Absolute, one-of-a-kind Milan couture. Stunning.”
The whispers buzzed like a hive of hornets around Preston and Cassidy, who stood frozen near the orchid pillar like statues carved from ice. Cassidy’s manicured nails dug so hard into Preston’s forearm that I could see the white marks through his sleeve, but he didn't feel it. His eyes were locked onto me with a terrified, glassy stare, as if he were looking at a ghost returned from the grave to drag him straight to hell.
Gideon’s hand rested warm and firm over mine where it was looped through his arm. His thumb brushed reassuringly against my knuckles.
“You’re breaking hearts all across Wall Street tonight, Vivian,” Gideon murmured softly, his voice meant only for me, rich with a dry, wicked amusement. “Look at your husband. I think he’s about to forget how to breathe.”
“Let him choke,” I replied evenly, my voice as cold as winter steel.
As we descended the grand marble staircase step by measured step, the crowd parted before us like water. High-powered executives who normally wouldn't give a mid-level analyst a second glance were nodding respectfully, raising their champagne flutes in silent tribute. Socialites stared with wide, envious eyes, trying to figure out which exclusive atelier had birthed the midnight-blue velvet masterpiece on my back.
When we reached the bottom of the stairs, we stepped directly into the path of Preston and Cassidy.
Cassidy looked like she wanted to swallow her own tongue. Her crimson dress, which had seemed so striking a moment ago, suddenly looked cheap and desperate standing next to the fierce, avant-garde brilliance of my Milan gown.
Preston finally found his voice, though it sounded thin, raspy, and thoroughly panicked.
“V-Vivian?” he stammered, stepping forward with a clumsy, jerky motion. “What... what are you doing here? How did you—and that dress—where did you get the money for that? Who brought you?”
I stopped just two feet away from him, looking down my nose at my legally wedded husband as if he were a speck of dust on the bottom of my designer heels.
“Good evening, Preston,” I said, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet circle of onlookers who had gathered around to watch the confrontation. “Surprised to see me? Did you honestly think your little backless dress code trap was going to keep me locked away in the dark while you played corporate executive with your mistress?”
Cassidy gasped, stepping back. “You—you witch! You have no right to—!”
“Shut your mouth, Cassidy,” I snapped, the sudden, lethal authority in my tone making her flinch violently. “You’ve been spending embezzled corporate capital for six months; the least you can do is maintain some basic manners in public.”
Preston’s face turned from pale white to a violent, mottled purple. “Embezzled? You’re insane! Security! Security, get this unhinged woman out of here—she’s trespassing!”
“Nobody is going anywhere, Vance,” a cold, lethal voice rang out.
Gideon Ashford stepped forward, placing himself between Preston and me like a protective wall of granite. Gideon pulled a thick, official federal document out of his tuxedo pocket and unfolded it with unhurried deliberation.
“Mr. Ashford, this is a private foundation event—you have no right to—!” Preston sputtered, his voice cracking.
“I have every right,” Gideon interrupted smoothly, holding the document up so the flashing cameras could capture every seal and signature. “As the primary stakeholder of Ashford & Sterling Capital, and as of twenty minutes ago, the court-appointed receiver of your personal assets under federal warrant number 88-B-419.”
The color vanished from Preston’s face for the second time that evening. His knees buckled slightly, and he caught himself against the edge of a mahogany cocktail table.
“A federal warrant...?” Preston whispered, his voice trembling uncontrollably. “That’s... that’s impossible. My partnership vesting isn't until Monday—!”
“Your partnership vesting was cancelled the moment federal agents raided your office safe an hour ago,” Gideon replied, his hazel eyes locking onto Preston with the cold, dead certainty of an executioner. “Every offshore account in the Caymans? Frozen. Your joint venture fund with Miss Vaughn? Seized under anti-money laundering statutes. And your equity stake in our firm? Revoked for corporate espionage and embezzlement.”

The ballroom erupted into absolute pandemonium.
Flashbulbs blinded the air as every journalist, blogger, and socialite surged forward, shoving microphones and cameras toward Preston, who stood shaking like a leaf in a hurricane, completely ruined in front of the entire New York elite.
