Chapter 3 - The Tailor of MilanThe next four days passed in a blur of late-night document reviews, clandestine meetings with federal investigators, and meticulous fittings in Gideon’s private suite on the top floor of the Glass Tower.

Every evening, after Preston thought I was safely tucked away at home drowning in self-pity, I was actually sitting across from federal prosecutors, handing over decrypted hard drives, transaction logs, and encrypted text backups that systematically dismantled every single lie Preston had built his career upon.
By Friday afternoon, Preston’s corporate accounts had been quietly flagged by federal regulators, and the net was drawn tight. He was completely unaware that the financial executioner’s axe was hovering an inch above his neck, waiting for Saturday night’s grand finale.
On Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m., I stood before the gilded floor-to-ceiling mirror in Gideon’s private dressing suite.
The transformation was absolute.
The midnight-blue velvet gown fit my body like liquid armor. The front was an immaculate, high-necked column of understated elegance, but when I turned around, the true brilliance of the design revealed itself. The deep, sweeping backless cut exposed the jagged, keloid scars winding across my shoulder blades. Yet, framed by the intricate, hand-woven silver crystal phoenix wings sewn directly into the garment’s structure, the scars no longer looked like a disfigurement. They looked like the raised, textured ridges of a mythical bird’s feathers, forged in fire and reborn in silver light.
It was terrifying, vulnerable, and fiercely majestic all at once.
A soft knock sounded at the heavy oak door.
“Vivian?” Gideon’s voice came through the wood, smooth and controlled. “Are you ready? Our car is waiting downstairs, and the ballroom is already filling up with the most gossipy, vicious billionaires in Manhattan.”
I took one final, deep breath, squared my shoulders, and pulled the dressing room door open.
Gideon was standing in the hallway, dressed in a flawless midnight-black tuxedo that accentuated his broad shoulders and commanding stature. When his hazel eyes landed on me, the polite, professional mask he always wore around the office completely slipped.
For three full seconds, Gideon Ashford—the man who never blinked, never hesitated, and never lost control—simply stared.

“Good God, Vivian,” he breathed, stepping closer, his gaze tracing the silver crystal phoenix wings framing the burns on my back. “You aren't just going to shock them. You’re going to rewrite what beauty means in this city.”
“Let’s go teach my husband a lesson,” I said, a cold, steady smile touching my lips.
