Chapter 4 - The Confrontation(Approx. 1,800 words)

At 8:00 AM the following morning, the knock came at my motel room door.

I peered through the peephole to see Richard Vance standing in the exterior hallway. The powerful seventy-year-old attorney looked aged by a decade. His usually immaculate grey suit was rumpled, his silk tie slightly askew, and the sharp, arrogant posture I had feared for three years was completely shattered.

I opened the door, keeping the safety chain engaged.

"Maya," Richard said, his voice flat, hollowed out by shock. "Can I come in?"

"No," I replied through the small crack. "You can say whatever you have to say right here."

Richard closed his eyes for a long moment, taking a shuddering breath. "I saw the email. I received the files at three in the morning."

"And?"

"Julian was bailed out two hours ago," Richard whispered, looking around the cheap motel corridor to ensure no one was listening. "His mother paid the bond before I could stop her. He’s at my house right now with Chloe. They are trying to draft a press release claiming that you suffered a psychiatric breakdown and that the photos were part of an unreleased indie film project."

I smiled—a cold, bitter expression that stretched the fresh stitches on my lip. "Let them release it. Detective Miller already has the RAW files, the audio logs, and the medical forensic report from Saint Jude’s. If he posts a single word lying about my mental health, my attorney will file a defamation lawsuit before the sun sets."

"Maya, please," Richard pleaded, pressing a trembling hand against the doorframe. "I am not here to defend him. God help me, I am not here to defend either of my children. What they did to you... it’s sick. It’s monstrous. I didn't know about the embezzlement. I didn't know Julian was stealing from his clients."

"He stole fifty thousand dollars, Richard," I said sharply. "He tried to cover it up by turning me into a fake cancer patient at my own baby shower."

"I know," Richard said quietly. "His brokerage called me at 7:00 AM. They started an internal audit after an anonymous tip was submitted last night."

I knew who sent that tip: Marcus, the photographer. He was burning Julian’s world to the ground, brick by brick.

"I came here to give you this," Richard said, reaching into his inner coat pocket and pulling out a thick, white legal envelope. He slid it through the narrow gap in the door.

I didn't open it immediately. "What is it?"

"It’s the deed to the lake house in upstate New York," Richard said. "It was held in my personal trust, entirely separate from Julian’s assets. It’s fully paid off. I’ve already executed a quitclaim deed transferring sole ownership to your name. There’s also a cashier's check inside for fifty thousand dollars—money from my personal account to ensure you have medical care, living expenses, and legal representation."

I looked at the envelope, then back at the man who had been my father-in-law. "Is this hush money, Richard? Are you trying to buy my silence so your precious family name doesn't end up on the front page of the city paper?"

Richard’s eyes welled with real tears. For the first time, I saw genuine shame in his face.

"No, Maya," he said softly. "My family name is already destroyed. My son is going to prison. My daughter will likely face charges as an accessory to fraud and assault. I cannot save them, and I will not try. This isn't hush money. It’s survival money for my grandchild. Take it, leave this city, and hire the best divorce attorney money can buy."

I held the heavy envelope against my chest. "If Julian comes near me—"

"He won't," Richard interrupted firmly. "I’ve revoked his access to all trust funds. I’ve locked him out of my house. If he steps foot near you, I will personally hand the district attorney every financial document needed to guarantee he serves maximum time."

He stood back, taking a final look at the white bandage on my face and the small, visible patch of shaved scalp near my hairline.

"I am so sorry, Maya," he whispered. "We raised a monster."
