Chapter 6 - The Assets(Approx. 1,800 words)

The legal battle that followed was swift and devastating.

With the overwhelming physical evidence, the public outrage, and Richard Vance’s refusal to finance his son’s defense, Julian’s legal team crumbled within weeks. His court-appointed criminal defense attorney advised him to take a plea deal to avoid a public trial that would guarantee a decades-long sentence.

In the civil court, Elena went to war.

Because Julian had used marital funds to finance his illegal gambling and had attempted to commit monumental fraud in my name, Elena filed for an emergency expedited divorce on the grounds of extreme mental and physical cruelty.

I sat in the sterile courtroom, wearing a simple navy dress, my hair neatly styled to cover the small area near my crown that was slowly growing back. Across the room sat Julian, dressed in an orange county jumpsuit, his hands shackled at his waist.

He looked hollow. The smooth, confident salesman who had manipulated me for years was gone. His eyes were sunken, his dark hair unwashed, and his skin pale under the harsh fluorescent lights.

"Mr. Vance," the family court judge said, her voice dripping with disdain as she reviewed the financial disclosures. "You have squandered over two hundred thousand dollars of client funds, placed your wife’s life and health in immediate jeopardy, and engaged in a stomach-churning scheme of public deceit."

Julian looked down at the defense table. "Your Honor, I was desperate... I was under immense pressure..."

"Silence," the judge snapped. "In twenty years on the bench, I have rarely seen a case of such calculated, callous malice toward a spouse."

She slammed her gavel down with a sharp crack.

"The court grants the petitioner’s motion in full. The property located on Maple Ridge Lane is ordered to be liquidated immediately, with one hundred percent of the equity awarded to Maya Vance. All remaining personal bank accounts, vehicles, and investments associated with Julian Vance are seized and awarded to the petitioner as partial restitution for physical and emotional damages."

Julian snapped his head up, his eyes wide with horror. "Your Honor, please! That leaves me with nothing! How am I supposed to pay my legal fees?!"

"You should have thought about that before you shaved your wife's head and painted fake bruises on her face, Mr. Vance," the judge replied coldly. "Court is adjourned."

As the guards stood up to lead Julian back to the holding cell, he looked at me across the wooden divider.

"Maya!" he called out, his voice cracking with desperate emotion. "Maya, please look at me! I loved you! I did it all for our family! You can't leave me with nothing!"

I didn't flinch. I didn't yell. I didn't even shed a tear.

I simply stood up, adjusted my coat over my swollen belly, and turned my back on him forever.
