Chapter 5 - The Web of Lies(Approx. 1,800 words)

Three days later, the story exploded.
Despite Richard’s attempt to handle things quietly, Chloe couldn't keep her mouth shut. Desperate to control the narrative before the police charges were formally filed, she leaked a heavily edited video to a local news outlet, claiming that I was a "troubled mother-to-be" who was attempting to extort her wealthy husband during a family dispute.
It was a fatal mistake.
Within two hours of the news segment airing, Marcus uploaded the full, unedited video footage and the high-resolution photo gallery to an online whistleblowing platform, accompanied by the caption: "The truth behind the 'sick wife' baby shower."
The internet reacted with furious velocity.
The story trended nationwide within twelve hours. Millions of people viewed the crisp, undeniable images of the white price tags on the theatrical neck brace, the open greasepaint palette, and the raw, horrifying photo of Julian pinning me down while Chloe clipped my hair.
Comment sections across social media exploded with outrage. The hashtag #JusticeForMaya hit the top of global trends.
By afternoon, news vans from major national networks were parked outside the Vance family home, outside Julian’s real estate agency, and outside the county courthouse.
Sitting in the quiet library of my new legal team’s office downtown, I watched the television screen on the wall.
"Julian Vance’s brokerage has officially terminated his employment," a news anchor announced against a background image of Julian’s mugshot. "Furthermore, the State Real Estate Licensing Board has suspended his license pending a criminal investigation into alleged client escrow fraud exceeding $200,000—a figure far higher than initial police estimates."
My attorney, a sharp, formidable woman named Elena Vance (no relation to Julian), muted the TV screen with a click of her remote.
"Two hundred thousand?" I asked, turning to look at her. "He told me it was fifty thousand."
"Julian was bleeding money, Maya," Elena said, laying out a stack of bank records on the conference table. "He wasn't just stealing to cover business losses. He was gambling on high-risk offshore crypto platforms. He lost over a hundred and fifty grand in the last four months alone. The baby shower fraud wasn't just to cover one small debt—he and Chloe were planning to launch an elaborate, multi-state GoFundMe scam claiming you had a rare, terminal neurological disorder requiring experimental treatment in Europe."
I felt sick to my stomach. "They were going to drag this out for months? Years?"
"As long as the donations kept pouring in," Elena confirmed. "They had already registered three fake non-profit entities under Chloe’s name last week."
She pushed a document toward me. "The District Attorney has upgraded the charges. Julian is now facing counts of grand larceny, scheme to defraud, conspiracy, felony domestic battery, and false imprisonment. Chloe is being charged as a co-conspirator."
"And the bail?"
"Revoked," Elena said with a cold, satisfied smile. "Once the financial audit revealed the scope of the embezzlement, the judge deemed him a flight risk. Julian is currently sitting in a county jail cell waiting for his arraignment."
I leaned back in the leather chair, placing a hand over my stomach. The baby kicked gently—a calm, rhythmic movement that grounded me amidst the chaos.

"What's our next move?" I asked.
"Now," Elena said, opening a fresh blue folder, "we strip him of everything he has left."
