Chapter 2 - The Stage of ReckoningDaniel took a frantic step toward me, his hands raised in a gestures of fake comfort, his polished lawyer facade cracking at the seams.

"Serena, stop right now," he warned through a forced, tight smile, his voice dropping into a harsh whisper. "You are completely out of line. You're hysterical. Evelyn, please excuse my wife—she hasn't slept in days because of the gala prep—"

"Touch me or speak over me again, Daniel," I said, turning my eyes onto him with an icy glare that made him freeze mid-step, "and I will have security remove you from this building before the opening remarks even finish."

Camille let out a harsh, bitter scoff from the corner of the room. "You can't talk to him like that! You think you own this place just because they're giving you a little charity trophy?"

Maya stepped forward like a protective lioness, placing her shoulder directly between Camille and me. "Shut your mouth," Maya spat at Camille, her eyes blazing. "If you take one more breath in this room, I will personally drag you down those stairs by your fake eyelashes."

Evelyn Grant didn't scream or raise her voice. As the head of a massive philanthropic empire, she possessed the kind of quiet, terrifying authority that commanded immediate respect. She looked down at the ruined silk of my gown, then looked at Daniel’s sweating forehead.

"Serena," Evelyn spoke softly, her eyes locked on mine. "What did you mean about financial fraud?"

"Daniel’s law firm has been managing the secondary escrow accounts for Harbor House for the past eighteen months," I revealed, keeping my eyes fixed on my husband. "Three days ago, I noticed two unauthorized wire transfers totaling four hundred thousand dollars routed through a shell company called C&D Holdings. I didn't want to believe it. But C&D stands for Camille and Daniel."

Camille’s mouth fell open, her smug composure completely shattering. She whipped her head around to stare at Daniel. "You said she didn't know about that account!"

"Shut up, Camille!" Daniel roared, his composure vanishing into pure, unadulterated panic. He turned back to Evelyn, his hands trembling. "Evelyn, listen to me! This is a domestic dispute! She's retaliating because our marriage is ending! There is no fraud—"

"Maya," I interrupted, ignoring Daniel completely. "Is my backup dress in the wardrobe van downstairs?"

Maya snapped back to professional focus. "Yes. The emerald green velvet gown you wore to the board dinner last month. It's hanging in the back."

"Go get it," I said. "And bring two security guards back up with you."

"On it," Maya said, turning on her heel and sprinting out of the green room.

Evelyn walked over to the door, stood in the frame, and crossed her arms, physically blocking Daniel and Camille from leaving the room. "Nobody leaves this room until the board's legal counsel arrives."

"Evelyn, you can't hold us here!" Camille shrieked, clutching her designer clutch. "This is illegal restraint!"

"I am the chair of the venue board, young lady," Evelyn replied coldly. "I can have you detained for property damage and physical assault until the police arrive to review the hallway security footage."

Daniel looked at me, his eyes wide with a desperate, pathetic plea. "Serena... please. We can talk about this privately. Think about my career! Think about what a scandal like this will do to my firm! We can work this out!"

I looked at the man I had spent four years sacrificing for. I looked at his expensive tuxedo, bought with money he had stolen from a shelter that saved abused women.

"I spent four years thinking about your career, Daniel," I said softly, reaching behind my neck to unzipper the ruined white dress. "It's time I thought about my life."

Ten minutes later, Maya returned with two broad-shouldered security guards and my emerald green velvet dress.

I stepped behind the dressing screen, stepped out of the beige-stained silk, and slipped into the deep green velvet. I zipped it up, pulled my hair into a sleek, low ponytail, and reapplied my red lipstick in the marble mirror.

When I stepped out from behind the screen, Evelyn looked at me and nodded slowly with profound respect.

"The ballroom is full, Serena," Evelyn said. "They are waiting for you."

"Let them wait no longer," I replied.

May you like

I walked past Daniel and Camille without giving them a second glance. As I stepped into the hallway, I heard the heavy, rhythmic footsteps of the venue security team taking their positions behind my husband.

I smoothed the velvet skirts of my dress, took a deep, clean breath, and walked toward the stage.
