Chapter 4 - The House on the HillTen minutes later, the grand iron gates of our suburban estate swung open to welcome a pair of unmarked black SUVs.

I stood by the second-floor balcony, watching through the cool autumn breeze as two security operatives escorted a humiliated, sobbing Daniel Sterling down the front steps. He carried a single canvas gym bag—all he was allowed to keep under the emergency asset forfeiture protocol.

Vanessa had already fled fifteen minutes earlier, calling an Uber from the bathroom while screaming obscenities at Daniel for ruining her financial portfolio with his collapsing company.

As Daniel reached the bottom of the steps, he looked up toward the balcony.

I didn't blink. I didn't smile. I simply stood there, bathed in the amber glow of the porch light, holding my phone against my chest.

He lowered his head in utter defeat, climbed into the back of the SUV, and the vehicle vanished into the night, swallowed by the dark winding roads of the elite neighborhood.

My phone vibrated in my palm.

It was my father.

I answered instantly. “Dad.”

“Is it done?” his voice rumbled through the speaker, calm, steady, and entirely unsurprised.

“It’s done,” I murmured, leaning against the wrought-iron railing.

“Are you hurt?”

Hearing the sudden, protective warmth in his voice, the adrenaline finally began to drain from my system. The pain in my back flared up sharply, but I swallowed the lump in my throat.

“I’m sore, Dad. But I’m safe.”

“Good,” my father said softly. “Pack a bag, Claire. Your private car is waiting at the lower gate. Come home.”

“I’m coming home,” I said.

I hung up the phone, took one last look at the empty study where my life had nearly shattered, and walked away without looking back. Sterling Enterprises was gone. Daniel was ruined. And the golden cage they thought they had built around me had turned out to be made of glass.
