Chapter 7 - The Downfall of VanessaWhile Daniel wandered the streets of Manhattan like a ghost, his former accomplice was facing a very different kind of reckoning.

Vanessa Cole sat inside her luxury penthouse apartment on the Upper East Side—an apartment she had purchased using high-interest developer loans guaranteed by Daniel’s corporate signature.

The front door chimed with a loud, aggressive ring.

Vanessa groaned, throwing her silk bathrobe tighter around herself as she marched down the hallway. “I told you, room service is at nine—!”

She yanked the door open, expecting a hotel attendant or a delivery driver.

Instead, she found three repossession agents standing in the hallway, accompanied by a court-appointed bailiff holding a stack of legal documents.

“Miss Vanessa Cole?” the bailiff asked crisply.

“Yes? What is this?” she snapped, crossing her arms.

“By order of the New York State Supreme Court and the federal receivership overseeing Sterling assets, this property and all its contents have been seized as collateral for unpaid fraudulent loans,” the bailiff announced, motioning for the agents to push past her into the apartment.

“You can’t do that!” Vanessa shrieked, panic flooding her voice. “This is my private residence! Daniel bought this for me!”

“Mr. Sterling didn't own anything, Miss Cole,” the bailiff replied coldly. “And according to forensic financial audits completed this morning, your personal accounts have also been frozen due to receiving over six hundred thousand dollars in illicit corporate kickbacks funneled through shell companies.”

Vanessa’s knees buckled. She staggered backward against the foyer wall as the agents systematically began placing bright orange seizure stickers on her designer handbags, her fur coats, and her television screens.

Her phone buzzed violently on the marble console table. She snatched it up, seeing Daniel’s name flashing on the screen.

She swiped answer, screaming into the receiver with pure, venomous hatred. “Are you happy now, you absolute moron?! The marshals are seizing my apartment! My accounts are gone! You ruined my life!”

“Vanessa, please,” Daniel’s voice came back, sounding broken, desperate, and hollow. “Send me twenty dollars. Just twenty dollars for a sandwich. I haven't eaten since yesterday morning. Everyone is blocking my calls—”

Vanessa hung up the phone, threw the device across the marble floor where it shattered into a dozen pieces, and slid down the wall in a heap of absolute, irrecoverable ruin.
