Chapter 10 - The Sweetest TasteTwo years after the night my mother poured red wine over Emersyn’s head, I celebrated my thirtieth birthday in the backyard of my green cottage.

The weather was perfect. Fairy lights were strung between the ancient oak trees, illuminating a long wooden table decorated with wild lavender, eucalyptus leaves, and vibrant yellow sunflowers.

Around the table sat my mother, Julian, Elena, Chloe, and a dozen close friends and colleagues who had become my chosen family. The air was thick with laughter, storytelling, and the rich smell of grilled steaks and wood-fired flatbreads.

My mother sat at the head of the table, looking radiant, healthy, and deeply content. Every now and then, she would look across the yard at me, raising her glass with a silent, knowing wink.

As the evening wore on, Julian slipped into the kitchen and returned carrying a small, beautifully crafted birthday cake. It wasn't a monstrous, multi-tiered corporate monstrosity designed to impress strangers. It was a rustic, single-tier lemon-lavender cake with smooth cream cheese frosting, topped with fresh berries and a single glowing candle.

Everyone sang "Happy Birthday," their voices harmonizing in the warm night air.

When the song ended, Julian placed the cake gently on the table in front of me, handing me a small wooden cake server.

"Make a wish, birthday girl," he whispered, kissing my cheek lightly.

I looked at the glowing flame, then around the table at the faces of the people who truly loved me—people who had stood by me when my world fell apart, people who had helped me rebuild a life far more beautiful than the one I had lost.

I didn't need to make a wish. Everything I had ever wanted—peace, dignity, love, and absolute freedom—was already sitting right here at this table.

I blew out the candle. The crowd cheered.

I carefully sliced a piece of the cake, placed it on a small ceramic plate, and took my first bite. The sweet, tangy lemon flavor was light, fresh, and perfection on my tongue.

My mother leaned across the table, smiling brightly. "How is it, sweetie?"

I swallowed, looking out at the glittering lights, feeling Julian’s hand resting gently on my shoulder, and smiled from the bottom of my heart.

"It's perfect, Mom," I said softly. "Absolutely, unequivocally sweet."
