Chapter 9 - Roots and BlossomsA year after the ruined wedding, my landscape firm landed its largest contract to date: designing a two-acre public therapeutic garden for a community mental health center downtown.

The project was a dream come true. I spent weeks sketching designs—winding stone pathways, shaded pergolas covered in fragrant wisteria, quiet water features, and clusters of resilient perennial flowers that bloomed season after season, regardless of how harsh the winter had been.

During the construction phase, I worked closely with the head contractor, a man named Julian whose quiet strength and easy laughter were a breath of fresh air. Julian was everything Abel was not—grounded, independent, deeply respectful of my expertise, and completely unbothered by strong, confident women.

We would sit on overturned wooden crates at the construction site during lunch breaks, sharing sandwiches, discussing soil composition, and talking about our lives without pretense or games. Julian listened when I spoke, valued my opinions, and never once made me feel like I needed to shrink myself to make him feel larger.

One Friday evening, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden light across the newly planted garden, Julian walked over to where I was kneeling, dusting dirt from my knees.

"Looks incredible, Maya," he said, offering me a hand to pull me up. His grip was warm, strong, and steady.

"We did good work here," I smiled, looking out over the flourishing garden.

"I was wondering," Julian said, scratching the back of his neck with a rare, slightly nervous grin. "If you're not too tired from building sanctuaries all day... would you want to grab dinner with me tonight? Just a simple dinner. No big crowds, no high society, and definitely no cake."

I laughed—a light, joyful sound that echoed through the quiet park.

"I would love that, Julian," I said, meeting his clear, honest eyes.

For the first time in my life, I wasn't stepping into a relationship out of obligation, fear, or a desire to fix someone else. I was stepping into it as a complete, whole person who knew her worth and refused to settle for anything less than genuine respect.
