Chapter 5 - Reclaiming My SpaceWith the legal ties severed and Abel officially served with a cease-and-desist letter, I threw myself headfirst into rebuilding my personal and professional life.

The viral video had turned into an unexpected turning point for my business. Clients who had seen my calm demeanor during the chaos reached out with supportive messages, and several high-profile commercial property owners hired my landscape firm to design elaborate corporate gardens. People wanted to work with someone who possessed composure under pressure.

To mark the beginning of my new chapter, I decided to overhaul my living space completely. The cozy two-bedroom cottage I owned on the edge of town had been partially decorated with Abel's preferences in mind—neutral, sterile gray tones that his mother had deemed "tasteful."

Over two weekends, my mother, my two best friends—Elena and Chloe—and I transformed the cottage. We painted the living room a deep, vibrant emerald green, hung floor-to-ceiling brass shelves filled with lush pothos plants and monstera leaves, and replaced the sleek modern sofa with a plush, mustard-yellow velvet couch that practically begged you to curl up with a good book.

On a Saturday evening, after finishing the final coat of paint in the dining room, the four of us sat around the wooden kitchen island, drinking crisp white wine and eating takeout sushi.

"I have an admission to make," Chloe said, setting her glass down and looking at me with deadpan seriousness. "I hated the wedding centerpieces Emersyn forced you to pick. Those bleached white hydrangeas looked like funeral arrangements."

"They were funeral arrangements," Elena chimed in, laughing. "They were burying Maya's happiness in real-time."

We all burst into laughter—the kind of deep, belly-aching laughter that clears out months of accumulated stress.

"In all seriousness, Maya," my mother said softly, reaching across the island to squeeze my hand. "How are you really doing? Deep down?"

I paused, looking around at the bright, vibrant space we had created, feeling the warm breeze drifting through the open kitchen window.

"I feel like I was underwater for three years, Mom," I admitted honestly. "And I finally broke through the surface and took my first real breath. I'm not angry anymore. I just feel... free."

"Good," Sarah smiled, raising her glass. "Because you deserve a life that belongs entirely to you."

Just as we toasted, my phone chimed on the counter with an email notification from an unknown sender. I unlocked the screen and glanced at the preview.

It was an email from Emersyn’s personal account.

Unlike Abel’s pathetic pleas, Emersyn’s message was a icy, calculated threat:

“Maya. Your childish stunt has caused severe financial and reputational damage to the Kingsley estate. My legal counsel has prepared a civil lawsuit for defamation, slander, and emotional distress. You have forty-eight hours to issue a public written apology and remove all media files from the internet, or we will take everything you own.”

I stared at the screen, a cold smile tugging at the corner of my lips.

They really thought I was still the quiet, accommodating girl who was afraid of making a scene. They had no idea what was coming next.
