Chapter 1 - The Shattered ShowerI was opening gifts at my baby shower when my mother suddenly grabbed my chin.

The entire living room went quiet.

Her fingers turned my face toward the harsh afternoon light streaming through the window, and that was when everyone saw it—the deep, purple split on my lower lip that I had been desperately hiding under three layers of thick makeup all afternoon.

My husband, Ethan, laughed from across the room near the refreshment table like it was a joke.

“She’s clumsy,” he said, holding a glass of punch. “Pregnancy’s making her emotional and uncoordinated too.”

But my mother, Elena, didn’t smile. Not even a little bit.

“Who did this to you, Chloe?” she asked me softly, her voice so low it chilled the air in the room.

My heart started pounding so violently against my ribs I thought I would throw up right there beside the towering pink diaper cake.

“Mom, it’s fine,” I whispered, trying to pull away. “I bumped into the kitchen cabinet.”

Ethan walked over with that fake, charming grin he always used whenever other people were watching.

“Your daughter’s been difficult lately, Elena,” Ethan said casually, taking a sip of his drink. “I had to put her back in line.”

The entire living room froze.

Nobody moved. Nobody breathed. Even the background music suddenly sounded unnaturally loud.

My mother slowly turned toward him. Her face changed in a way I had never seen in my twenty-eight years of life. Cold. Empty. Dangerous.

“Did he hit you?” she asked me, her eyes never leaving Ethan’s face.

I tried to lie. I really did. Because I knew what Ethan would do to me later in the car if I embarrassed him in public.

But then Ethan reached down and squeezed my shoulder hard enough to bruise my skin through my silk dress, a silent warning to stay quiet.

And something inside me broke.

Tears filled my eyes, and I gave a tiny, trembling nod.

The room exploded.

My cousin stood up first. “Are you serious right now?!”

Ethan immediately raised his hands, smirking. “Oh please, don’t make this dramatic. Married couples fight.”

My best friend shouted, “You split her lip!”

“She provoked me!” Ethan snapped, his charm vanishing into defensive arrogance.

That was the exact moment my mother took off her gold hoop earrings. Slowly. Calmly. Like she had done it a hundred times before.

Ethan laughed when he saw her standing there. He was six-foot-two, nearly two hundred pounds, and played college football. My mother was a gray-haired woman in her sixties wearing a pastel cardigan.

“You need to sit down, old lady,” he sneered, stepping closer to her.

“You hit my pregnant daughter,” she said softly.

Ethan rolled his eyes and muttered, “And I’d do it again if she kept disrespecting me.”

Ten minutes later, that same six-foot-two man was on his knees begging my mother to stop.

Blood dripped from his shattered nose onto the hardwood floor. One of the guests was screaming in the corner. Another had already dialed 911.

And my mother? She stood over Ethan without a single scratch on her body, her knuckles lightly dusted with his blood, while he wept like a terrified child.

That’s when she looked directly at me and said something that made my stomach drop into a cold abyss.

“I told you your father’s world would eventually find you, Chloe.”

Ethan was still bleeding on the floor when he suddenly started laughing. A wet, coughing laugh.

“You think you scare me?” Ethan spat, wiping blood from his chin. “You have no idea who you’re dealing with either.”

My mother’s expression darkened instantly. And for the very first time that day... she looked nervous.

Then Ethan said five words that made her go pale as death:

“I know who your husband was.”
