Chapter 3 - The Inheritance of BloodI sat on the edge of the sofa, my hands resting over my seven-month pregnant belly, listening to the rain begin to patter against the windowpane.

My mother sat across from me at the coffee table, carefully wiping her hands with a damp cloth.

"Your father was not a fisherman, Chloe," Elena began, her voice steady and deliberate. "Victor Vance was the most powerful operational strategist in the Midwest crime syndicate. For fifteen years, he built their financial networks, laundered their capital, and managed their territories."

"And you?" I asked, my voice cracking. "Who are you?"

Elena offered a bitter, hollow smile. "I was his chief of security. Before I met your father, I was an operative for a federal task force assigned to infiltrate his organization. But I fell in love with him. And when the syndicate turned on him because he tried to go legitimate to protect you... I helped him disappear."

I stared at her, feeling as though the room were spinning out of control. The woman who baked blueberry muffins for my high school PTA meetings, who knitted baby blankets, was a trained federal operative and a mob strategist's widow.

"Ethan..." I choked out. "How did Ethan find out?"

"Ethan didn't find out on his own," Elena said, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Ethan is a low-level enforcer for the Moretti family—the very syndicate your father left. He approached you two years ago at your auditing firm on purpose. He targeted you, Chloe. He married you to get close to your father's estate."

A wave of pure nausea washed over me.

Every romantic dinner, every sweet memory, every laugh we had shared over the past two years had been a calculated lie. He hadn't fallen in love with me. He had been assigned to hunt me down like an asset.

And the physical abuse? The shoving, the isolation, the split lip?

"He was trying to break you," Elena whispered, reaching out to cover my trembling hand with her own. "He wanted you scared, dependent, and compliant so that when the time came, you would sign over your father's private trusts without asking questions."

"What trusts?" I sobbed, tears streaming down my face. "I don't have six million dollars, Mom! I work sixty hours a week auditing corporate tax returns!"

Elena reached into her blouse, pulled out a small silver key attached to a heavy chain, and laid it on the glass table between us.

"Your father didn't leave you cash, Chloe," Elena said softly. "He left you the master ledger. The complete encrypted records of every corrupt politician, judge, and syndicate boss in three states. It's stored in a private safety deposit box at the Central National Bank."

My breath caught in my throat.

"That ledger isn't just money," Elena continued. "It's absolute leverage. And now that Ethan knows you're close to giving birth, the Moretti family is going to move on us tonight."

Before I could ask another question, the house lights flickered twice... and went completely dark.
