Chapter 5 - The SafehouseThe basement door shuddered violently as heavy boots kicked against the thick oak wood upstairs, but the iron deadbolts held firm.

"They won't get through that door before the police arrive," Elena whispered, pulling a tactical flashlight from her pocket and clicking it on. The beam illuminated a narrow concrete room filled with old storage boxes, a workbench, and a heavy steel door set into the far foundation wall.
She walked over to the steel door, typed a six-digit code into a concealed keypad, and turned a heavy wheel. The door hissed open, revealing a small, climate-controlled bunker containing two cots, emergency medical supplies, and several computer monitors connected to private satellite feeds.
"You built a bunker under my house?" I gasped, stepping inside.
"I built this five years ago, the moment you told me you were marrying Ethan," Elena corrected softly, closing and locking the steel blast door behind us. "I knew who his family was the second I ran his background check."
I sank onto one of the cots, burying my face in my hands as tears of pure exhaustion and terror finally broke through. "If you knew who he was... why didn't you stop me?! Why did you let me marry him?!"
Elena sat beside me, wrapping a warm arm around my shoulders.
"Because if I had forbidden it, you would have resented me and run straight to him," Elena explained gently. "And more importantly, as long as Ethan thought he was playing you, the Moretti family kept their distance. I had to let him stay close so I could monitor their moves and protect you until we could cut the head off the snake."
She pointed to one of the live computer monitors on the wall.
The screen displayed a high-definition security camera feed of the street outside. Four police cars had completely surrounded my house. Officers were escorting two handcuffed gunmen out the front door, while paramedics were loading a third onto a stretcher.
In the center of the street, standing beside an unmarked black sedan, was Ethan.
He had posted bail using syndicate money less than two hours after his arrest. He stood in the rain, his nose bandaged, staring directly up at my house with an expression of pure, unadulterated venom.
"He's not going to stop, Mom," I whispered, watching my husband's face on the screen. "He knows everything now."
"No, he doesn't," Elena countered, her voice hardening into polished steel. "He thinks he's hunting a defenseless pregnant girl and her retired mother. He has no idea that tomorrow morning, we are going to the Central National Bank to retrieve your father's ledger."
May you like
"And then what?" I asked.
Elena looked me straight in the eyes. "And then, Chloe... you are going to use your skills as an auditor to destroy the Moretti empire once and for all."
