Chapter 3 - Midnight Reckoning

The elevator descent felt like freefall.

When the mirrored doors slid open to the opulent lobby of the Harbor Grand, I walked with brisk, mechanical precision, ignoring the curious glances of the front desk clerks. I didn't cry. The tears had frozen somewhere between the eighth floor and the lobby. Shock had burned away the sorrow, leaving a raw, blistering fury in its wake.

I reached my sedan in the self-parking garage, locked all four doors, and threw the blue binder onto the passenger seat. My hands were shaking so severely I could barely fit the key into the ignition.

My phone illuminated on the console.

*Daniel Calling.*

I silenced it. Five seconds later, another call: *Daniel.*

Then a text:

*Claire, please. You don't understand the full picture. Lauren is playing you. Bring the binder back up. We can fix this tonight. Don't throw our entire life away over a misunderstanding.*

A misunderstanding.

I leaned my forehead against the steering wheel and let out a single, ragged breath. He had spent months sitting across from me at our breakfast table, kissing my forehead before leaving for work, asking how my garden was doing, all while systematically drafting documents that would bankrupt me and brand me a federal felon.

I opened my banking app on my phone.

I navigated to our joint savings account—the one where we kept our emergency reserves and the proceeds from the sale of my grandmother's jewelry.

*Balance: $142.18.*

My heart plummeted into an icy void. Last month, that balance had been $185,000.

I checked my personal business checking account for my interior design firm. A pending transfer notice flashed in red text: *Scheduled Wire Transfer: $45,000 to Apex Global Holdings LLC – Pending Final Authorization.*

He had initiated the transfer this morning while I was picking out his anniversary gift.

I clicked *Cancel Transfer* with a savage jab of my thumb. The screen refreshed: *Transfer Cancelled.*

A soft tap against my driver’s side window made me gasp.

I looked up, ready to throw the car into reverse and ram Daniel if he was standing there. But it wasn't Daniel.

It was Lauren.

She had thrown on a black trench coat over Daniel’s white shirt, slipped into a pair of flat sneakers, and was carrying an overnight duffle bag. Her face was streaked with tears, her hair pulled back into a messy ponytail.

She tapped the glass again, mouthing: *Please. Let me in.*

I hesitated for three agonizing seconds. Was she an accomplice trying to retrieve the binder? Or was she my only lifeline?

I unlocked the passenger door.

Lauren slid into the seat, pulling the door shut immediately. "Lock it," she breathed.

I hit the central lock. "Why are you here, Lauren? Why didn't you stay with him?"

May you like

"Because he’s packing his bags to leave for the airport," Lauren said, catching her breath. "He has an open ticket to Zurich for tomorrow morning. He was never planning to come home on Monday, Claire."
