Chapter 8 - The Tarmac Ambush

The private terminal at Norfolk International was quiet, exclusive, and shielded behind tinted glass and high security fencing. Wealthy executives and charter clients rarely had to deal with the indignities of commercial lines. Daniel loved that exclusivity; he often bragged that the private terminal was the only way a civilized man should travel.
Daniel stepped out of his Mercedes in the executive drop-off lane. He tipped the valet a fifty-dollar bill, grabbed his heavy aluminum briefcase and garment bag, and walked briskly toward the private charter desk.
"Mr. Vance?"
I was sitting in the passenger seat of Marcus Vance’s black town car, parked fifty yards away in the executive visitor bay. Beside us sat two unmarked black Suburbans with dark government plates.
"Wait for the signal," Vance instructed calmly, his eyes fixed on the glass entrance. "The U.S. Marshals are already inside with the tarmac security team."
Through the floor-to-ceiling glass of the terminal, I watched Daniel approach the counter. He pulled out a dark blue passport cover, placing it on the polished marble desk, flashing his charismatic, million-dollar smile at the attendant.
The attendant tapped the keyboard, smiled politely, and reached for his bag.
Then, two men in gray suits stepped out from the private lounge behind the counter. Another two emerged from the security corridor to his left.
One of the men produced a gold badge from his coat, holding it at eye level.
Even from fifty yards away through the glass, I saw Daniel’s posture stiffen instantly. His chin pulled back. He took a half-step to the right, but a fifth agent in a tactical vest stepped smoothly into his path, blocking the exit.
"That's the strike," Vance murmured, opening his car door. "Let’s go."
We stepped out into the crisp morning air. My heart was pounding, but my steps were steady and deliberate. As we walked through the automatic sliding doors of the private terminal, the scene inside had already frozen into sharp, clinical silence.
Daniel was pinned against the marble check-in counter, his arms twisted behind his back. The sharp *clack* of stainless steel handcuffs snapping shut echoed across the vaulted ceiling.
"You have the wrong man!" Daniel was shouting, his face red, struggling against the two federal marshals holding him. "I am a senior partner at Sterling & Croft! I demand to speak with my attorney! This is harassment!"
"Daniel Sterling," a tall, stern woman with an FBI badge around her neck recited calmly from a laminated card. "You are under arrest pursuant to a federal warrant issued by the Eastern District of Virginia for multiple counts of wire fraud, bank fraud, aggravated identity theft, and grand larceny."
"This is an administrative error!" Daniel raged, his voice cracking. "Call my wife! Call Claire Sterling! She is the managing director of Apex Global! She authorized all these transfers!"
"I don't think so, Daniel," a clear, cold voice rang out.
Daniel went utterly silent. His head snapped toward the entrance.
I walked across the polished marble floor, stopping just three feet from him. Beside me stood Marcus Vance, holding a thick red legal folder.
Daniel stared at me, his eyes wide with horrified comprehension. "Claire? What... what did you do?"
May you like
"I didn't do anything, Daniel," I said, looking down at his handcuffed wrists. "You did this to yourself. You wrote the script. I just handed it to the director."
