Chapter 6 - The Spider’s Web

The grandfather clock in our front foyer was chiming 5:00 AM when my key turned in the lock of our four-bedroom colonial home.

The house was dark, silent, and smelled of the cedar wood polish I had used on the banisters the day before. Everything was pristine. The dining room table still had the silver runner laid out for our anniversary breakfast.

I left the lights off, kicked off my heels, and sat on the bottom step of the staircase in the dark, wrapped in an oversized knit cardigan, holding an empty mug between my hands.

At 6:15 AM, the roar of a high-performance engine broke the quiet dawn. Headlights swept across our living room ceiling.

A car door slammed. Heavy, hurried footsteps came up the brick walk.

The front door opened. Daniel walked in, a leather duffle bag over his shoulder, his hair disheveled, his eyes bloodshot and frantic.

When he saw me sitting on the stairs in the dim light, he startled, stopping dead in his tracks.

"Claire," he breathed out, immediately lowering the duffle bag to the floor. "Thank God. I’ve been driving all over town looking for you. You weren't answering your phone. I thought... I thought something terrible had happened."

He rushed toward me, dropping to one knee at the base of the stairs, reaching for my hands.

I pulled my hands back into the sleeves of my sweater, staring down at him with hollow, exhausted eyes. I let my lower lip tremble. It wasn't hard—the grief was real, even if the weakness was a facade.

"How could you, Daniel?" I whispered, my voice cracked and frail. "In our twelfth year? In a hotel room with someone you work with?"

Daniel breathed a visible sigh of relief. His shoulders relaxed. Just as Marcus Vance had predicted, the narcissist saw a jealous, wounded wife, completely oblivious to the legal noose tightening around his neck.

"Claire, baby, listen to me," Daniel said, his voice dropping into that smooth, velvety tone that had charmed me a decade ago. "Lauren was a terrible, reckless mistake. She’s an unstable woman who tried to insert herself into my life. The things she said at the hotel... she was trying to destroy us out of spite because I fired her."

"She said we were broke," I said, a tear rolling down my cheek on cue. "She said you used my father’s house."

Daniel let out a soft, dismissive chuckle, reaching up to gently brush the tear from my face. I forced myself not to recoil from his touch.

"She’s lying, sweetheart. She’s completely unhinged. The house is fine. Our money is fine. Apex Global is just a standard corporate entity we use for high-yield treasury management. You don't understand the complexities of corporate finance, and she used that to terrify you."

"Show me the accounts, Daniel," I whimpered. "Please. Just let me see that we're safe."

Daniel’s jaw tightened imperceptibly before he offered another warm, reassuring smile. "I will. I promise. But my business laptop crashed, and I need to run to the corporate IT center in D.C. this afternoon to get it restored. I’m going to pack a quick change of clothes, get this sorted out, and then I’m coming straight home. We’ll sit down with our personal banker on Monday morning. I swear to you, Claire, on our marriage, everything is under control."

"Do you still love me?" I asked, looking straight into his deceptive, beautiful hazel eyes.

Daniel stood up, leaning down to kiss the crown of my head. "More than anything in this world. You are my home, Claire. You’ve always been my foundation."

He turned and hurried up the stairs toward his private home office.

The moment his back was turned, the trembling in my lip ceased. My face set into cold stone.

I pulled my phone from my sweater pocket beneath the banister and typed a single text to Marcus Vance:
