Chapter 5 - The First SunriseThe sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting long, bruised streaks of purple and gold across the manicured lawns of the Castellano estate. Upstairs in the master guest suite, the room was quiet, lit only by the warm, soft glow of a bedside lamp.

Raffaele stood quietly in the doorway, his hand resting on the wooden jamb.
Evelyn was sitting propped up against a mountain of pillows. She had been bathed, her dark hair brushed and neatly falling over her shoulders, dressed in a soft, clean cotton nightgown provided by Dr. Vance. She was holding a cup of warm chamomile tea in her frail hands, staring out the window at the distant tree line where the sky was turning twilight blue.
She turned her head slowly as she heard him enter. A soft, hesitant smile touched her pale lips.
“You don't have to stand in the doorway, Raffaele,” she said softly, her voice still raspy, but carrying a warmth that hadn't been there hours ago. “You’re allowed to come in.”
Raffaele exhaled a long, shaky breath. He walked across the room, pulling up a wooden chair and sitting down beside the bed. He reached out, gently covering her thin hand with his own.
“How are you feeling?” he asked, his voice thick with emotion.
“Like I’m learning how to breathe for the very first time,” Evelyn whispered. She looked down at their joined hands. “For five years, Raffaele... every time I heard footsteps above me in the bridal suite, I prayed it was you. I prayed you hadn't forgotten me. But after the third year... when the water rations got shorter and the dark got heavier... I started to believe Bianca. I started to believe that you had moved on, that you didn't care.”
“I never stopped looking for you, Evelyn,” Raffaele said, his voice breaking as tears threatened to spill over his eyelashes. “Every single day of my life, I wondered where you went. If I had known... if I had any idea what my own family was capable of...”
“I know,” she interrupted gently, squeezing his fingers with a surprising strength. “Bianca made sure I heard everything. Whenever you walked past the door during your anniversary visits to this wing... she would turn up the speakers she wired into the floor. She wanted me to hear you talking about how I abandoned you. She wanted to break my spirit before she broke my mind.”
Raffaele felt a fresh wave of cold fury, but looking into Evelyn’s eyes—eyes that held the quiet, indestructible resilience of a survivor—the anger melted into awe.
“They’re gone, Evelyn,” Raffaele promised, his voice ringing with absolute conviction. “Julian is in custody. Bianca is detained. The police are combing through every account, every document, every inch of this estate. They will never hurt you again. And when you’re ready... this house will be yours. Or we can leave. We can go anywhere in the world you want.”
Evelyn turned her face back toward the window, watching the first evening star blink into existence above the horizon.
“I don't want to run, Raffaele,” she said quietly. “This was supposed to be our home. And I think... it’s time we finally had our wedding day.”

Raffaele stared at her, stunned by her courage, before a deep, genuine smile broke across his face. He leaned forward, pressing his lips gently against her knuckles.
“Whatever you want, Evelyn,” he whispered. “Whatever you want.”
