Chapter 7 - The Mask SlipsThe silence in the study was so heavy it felt physical. You could hear the faint hum of the centralized air conditioning and the distant, muffled sirens crawling up from the Manhattan streets sixty-two floors below.

Vanessa backed away slowly until her spine hit the heavy oak bookshelves. The trembling facade of innocence was completely gone. Her lips curled into a bitter, venomous sneer.

"You really are an arrogant fool, Nathaniel," Vanessa spat, her voice dripping with pure contempt. "You thought you built an empire all by yourself. You thought you were untouchable. My uncle wanted your logistics network, and it was ridiculously easy to get inside your head. All I had to do was wear the right dress, laugh at your boring jokes, and play the doting fiancée."

Nathaniel didn't move. He didn't yell. He stood behind his desk like a statue carved from granite, but the veins in his temples throbbed violently.

"You planned all of this," Nathaniel said, every word a frozen icicle. "The missing jewelry... the staged fight this morning... you were trying to clear out anyone loyal to me so you could clean out the servers."

"Of course I did," Vanessa laughed, a harsh, unhinged sound. "And it would have worked, too, if it weren't for this miserable little maid poking her nose where it didn't belong!"

She turned her venomous glare toward Amara, who stood near the door with her arms crossed, watching the wreckage of Vanessa's grand scheme with calm detachment.

"She found the floorboard in the East Suite three days ago," Vanessa snarled, lunging forward as if she wanted to physically tear Amara apart.

The two private investigators instantly stepped forward, grabbing Vanessa firmly by both arms and pinning her wrists behind her back before she could take another step.

"Let me go, you thugs!" Vanessa screamed, thrashing wildly. "My father will ruin every single one of you! You can't touch me! Do you hear me? You can't touch me!"

"Your father can't save you, Vanessa," Marcus Vance stated coldly, pulling a set of official federal arrest warrants from his briefcase. "Richard Vance was picked up by federal marshals twenty minutes ago on charges of industrial espionage, wire fraud, and corporate conspiracy. You're coming with us, Ms. Vance. And your bail won't be set until the next century."

As the investigators hauled a screaming, kicking Vanessa out of the study and down the private elevator, the penthouse fell back into a profound, suffocating stillness.

Nathaniel remained standing behind his desk, staring down at the stolen blueprints and wire transfer receipts scattered across the wood. The illusion of his perfect life had shattered into a million irreparable pieces.

Slowly, heavily, he raised his head and looked across the room at Amara.
