Chapter 7 - The Trial of Vanessa SterlingTwo months later, the Federal Courthouse in downtown Boston was surrounded by news vans, flashbulbs, and heavy security barricades.

The trial of United States v. Vanessa Sterling and Daniel Vance had reached its final day.

Emily sat in the front row of the courtroom, wearing a tailored charcoal suit, her hand resting safely inside Dominic’s firm grip. Beside them sat Antonio, looking regal and strong, supported by two medical aides.

At the defense table, Vanessa Sterling looked unrecognizable. Her designer dresses were replaced by a plain blue prison uniform, her hair unstyled, her face hollowed out by weeks in federal detention. Beside her, Daniel Vance sat with his head bowed, refusing to look toward the Romano family.

The judge cleared his throat and banged his gavel.

“Will the jury foreman please read the verdict?”

A distinguished elderly woman stood up in the jury box, unfolding a piece of paper.

“On count one, conspiracy to commit murder in the first degree: We find the defendant, Vanessa Sterling, Guilty.”

Gasps erupted through the gallery. Vanessa collapsed onto the table, sobbing hysterically.

“On count two, corporate espionage and wire fraud: Guilty.”

“On count three, unlawful administration of a controlled substance: Guilty.”

The foreman continued through all twelve counts, delivering unanimous guilty verdicts for both Vanessa and Daniel.

The judge looked down over his spectacles at Vanessa.

“Vanessa Sterling, your actions were driven by monstrous greed, a complete lack of human empathy, and a calculated attempt to murder a vulnerable elderly man. This court sentences you to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole.”

He turned to Daniel Vance. “Daniel Vance, for your betrayal of trust and participation in this conspiracy, you are sentenced to eighteen years in federal custody.”

BANG.

The gavel fell with absolute finality.

Federal marshals stepped forward, clicking heavy handcuffs around Vanessa’s wrists. As she was led past the gallery, she caught sight of Emily standing beside Dominic.

“You!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing frantically against the high courtroom ceilings. “You ruined my life! You were just a maid! You were nobody!”

Emily stood tall, looking at the crying woman without an ounce of malice or fear.

“I was the person who stayed awake when he was afraid,” Emily said softly, her voice carrying across the quiet aisle. “That made all the difference.”

Vanessa was dragged through the heavy double doors into the dark corridor of the courthouse, her screams fading into nothingness.

Dominic turned to Emily, pulling her into a warm, protective embrace right there in the middle of the courtroom. He kissed her forehead, his eyes dark with intense emotion.

“It’s completely over,” Dominic whispered against her skin. “The shadows are gone.”

Antonio reached out from his wheelchair, wrapping his hands around both of theirs. “Now,” the old man smiled warmly, tears of joy twinkling in his eyes, “let’s go home.”
