Chapter 8 - Whispers of the HeartSummer had arrived in New England, transforming the Romano estate into a vibrant paradise of green lawns, blooming rose gardens, and warm sea breezes blowing off the Atlantic coast.

Life at the mansion had taken on a beautiful, serene rhythm.
Toby, Emily’s eight-year-old brother, was now living in a private guest cottage on the estate grounds during his summer break from his specialized school. He spent his mornings doing physical therapy in the heated indoor pool, guided by top pediatric specialists, and his afternoons playing chess with Antonio in the sunny gazebo.
Dominic walked down the stone path toward the rose garden late one Saturday afternoon. He had discarded his suit coat, wearing a simple white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, watching the scene before him.
Toby was sitting in a custom motorized wheelchair, laughing as Antonio tried to cheat at a game of checkers on the stone table. Emily sat nearby on a teak bench, wearing a yellow summer dress, reading a book, her laughter chiming through the afternoon air.
Dominic felt a sensation in his chest he hadn't experienced in thirty years.
Peace. Pure, unbroken peace.
For years, he had believed his life was meant to be lived in the brutal shadows of syndicate wars, strategic marriages, and constant vigilance. He had surrounded himself with iron, concrete, and armed guards, thinking that was how a man protected what he loved.
But it was this small, humble woman who had taught him that real strength wasn't built on fear—it was built on devotion.
Emily looked up and spotted him walking toward them. Her face lit up with a brilliant smile that made Dominic’s heart beat faster.
She stood up and walked down the grass path to meet him halfway.
“You’re home early,” she said, stepping into his space naturally.
“I finished the dock negotiations early,” Dominic said, taking her hands in his. He reached up, gently tucking a loose strand of auburn hair behind her ear. “I couldn't stand being away from you another hour.”
Emily flushed, looking down at their joined hands. “Dominic...”
“Walk with me,” he murmured softly.
He led her down the winding gravel path toward the private overlook at the edge of the estate cliff, where the deep blue waters of the ocean stretched endlessly out to the horizon. The waves crashed rhythmically against the rocks below, sprayed with white sea foam.
They stood side-by-side near the carved stone balustrade, the sea wind playing with Emily’s dress.
Dominic reached into his coat pocket. He pulled out the small, frayed blue notebook that had started it all.
Emily smiled fondly at it. “You still carry that?”
“Every single day,” Dominic replied softly. He opened the cover, looking down at her neat handwriting on the first page.
“Look at where we started, Emily,” Dominic said, his voice dropping into a tender, gravelly tone. “Nineteen nights of fear, dark hallways, and cold marble floors. You had every reason to quit. You had every reason to walk away and save yourself.”
He turned to face her fully, taking both of her hands in his left hand.
With his right hand, Dominic reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.
Emily’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes went wide.
Dominic popped the velvet box open. Inside sat a breathtaking ring—not a ostentatious corporate diamond like the one he had given Vanessa, but an antique platinum band set with a brilliant, flawless sapphire surrounded by delicate diamond leaves. It was elegant, timeless, and pure.
Dominic dropped to one knee on the green grass overlooking the ocean.
“Dominic...” Emily whispered, tears instantly welling in her eyes, her hands trembling.
“Emily Carter,” Dominic said, looking up at her with slate-gray eyes filled with absolute, unconditional love. “You saved my father when he was dying in the dark. You brought light back into a house that had known only shadows. You taught me how to love, how to trust, and how to protect what truly matters.”
He reached up, holding the ring toward her.
“I don't offer you a life of luxury or social status—I offer you my heart, my protection, and my whole life. Will you marry me, Emily? Will you be my wife?”
Emily let out a happy, sobbing laugh, dropping to her knees right in front of him on the grass, throwing her arms tightly around his neck.
“Yes!” she cried out, her voice echoing over the crashing waves. “Yes, Dominic! A thousand times yes!”

Dominic held her tight, lifting her into his arms as he stood up, swinging her around on the cliffside while her laughter mixed with the sound of the ocean. He set her down gently, sliding the sapphire ring onto her finger—a perfect fit.
He cupped her face in his broad hands and leaned down, pressing his lips to hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their souls together forever.
