Chapter 4 - THE ARCHITECTURE OF BETRAYAL

For the next two hours, the sunroom became a war room.

Sofia recounted every detail of the hospital visit, omitting nothing—the panic in her mother’s eyes, the crushing grip on her wrist, and the terrifying realization that Gregor Antonov had been standing in the hallway at the exact moment of recognition.

Damian listened without interrupting, pacing the Persian rug with the silent, predatory grace of a caged wolf. When Sofia finished, he walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out into the dark, manicured gardens where armed security patrols moved along the perimeter fence.

"Gregor has been with us for nearly two decades," Damian said, his voice devoid of emotion, though his jaw muscles twitched violently. "When my father died, Gregor kept the waterfront from tearing itself apart. He took a knife to the ribs during the dock wars of '08. He is the first person I call when a shipment goes dark."

"Loyalty isn't a lifetime guarantee, Damian," Elena said sharply, gripping the arms of her wheelchair. "It's an investment that corrupts when the dividends get high enough."

"Who bought him?" Damian asked quietly.

"Victor Moreau," Sofia ventured, speaking before she remembered her place.

Both Volkovs turned to look at her. Sofia swallowed hard, refusing to shrink back.

"At the gala, when Cassandra Vale was screaming at me, she mentioned Moreau’s name indirectly before you arrived," Sofia pressed on, her mind racing backward through the chaos of that night. "She said, 'You think you can win against people who own the city? Moreau is just warming up.' Everyone thought she was just being a spoiled brat, but what if she wasn't? What if the Vales and Moreau are laundering money through the Hargrove hotel investments?"

Damian stared at her, genuine shock flickering behind his pale eyes.

"Cassandra Vale’s father has been trying to buy into our shipping routes for three years," Damian realized, pieces clicking together in his mind like tumblers in a safe. "I blocked him every time. If Moreau backed his debt..."

"Then Moreau used the Vales to get close to your mother," Elena finished, her breath catching. "And Gregor let them in."

"If Gregor is compromised," Damian said, his voice turning ice-cold, "every safe room in this estate is compromised. Every security camera feed, every guard rotation, every shipping manifest is sitting on Moreau’s desk."

"We can't fire him," Elena warned instantly. "If Gregor realizes we know, he won't run—he’ll strike. He has eighteen years of intel on how to breach this house. He knows every blind spot."

"Then we don't fire him," Damian said, a dangerous, razor-thin smile touching his lips. "We feed him a ghost."

Sofia looked between mother and son. "What does that mean?"

"It means we act completely normally," Damian instructed, stepping closer to Sofia until she could smell the expensive sandalwood and rain on his jacket. "Gregor thinks he’s running the board. We let him keep thinking that, while we trace every offshore account he’s opened in the last four years."

"And my mother?" Sofia asked, her voice cracking with fear for Rosa. "If Gregor knows she woke up and recognized him—"

"Your mother is being moved tonight," Damian interrupted, his tone absolute. "To a private, underground medical ward beneath this estate. The best doctors, uninterrupted monitoring, and a security detail that answers only to me."

Sofia looked into his eyes and saw the terrifying, magnificent weight of a man who ruled a dark empire, yet was currently willing to burn it to the ground to keep her family safe.

"Okay," Sofia whispered. "Let's hunt the wolf."
