Chapter 6 - THE TRAP AT DAWN

The predawn air was biting cold as Sofia stepped out onto the gravel path near the estate’s eastern perimeter gate. The sky was the color of bruised slate, the trees casting long, skeletal shadows across the stone walls.

Inside the central security command post, Damian and four of his most trusted, thoroughly vetted guards—men who had bled with his father before Gregor corrupted the ranks—were monitoring the closed-circuit feeds.

On the monitor, Gregor Antonov could be seen walking methodically along the perimeter fence, flashlight beam sweeping across the iron bars and motion sensors. He looked calm, professional, and utterly lethal.

"He’s approaching Sector Four," whispered Nikolai, one of the loyal guards, adjusting his tactical headset. "All cameras on that line are looping prerecorded footage. He won't know we're tracking him."

"Let him walk," Damian ordered, his voice flat and steady over the comm-link. "Do not engage until he reaches the old greenhouse."

Sofia stood beside Damian in the command room, her eyes glued to the monitors. Her fingers were clenched so tightly into fists her nails bit into her palms.

On screen, Gregor paused by the overgrown botanical greenhouse—a relic from the estate’s previous owners, filled with cracked glass and dead vines. He pulled a encrypted satellite phone from his tactical vest—a device that had never appeared on any of the Volkov inventory logs—and began typing a text message.

"He’s contacting Moreau," Sofia whispered.

"Intercept the transmission," Damian ordered the tech specialist.

A computer screen flickered. Message decrypted.

TO: V. Moreau

MSG: The package has been moved. The girl found out. Clean up the hospital angle or we’re both exposed.

Damian’s eyes turned to shards of ice. He picked up his Sig Sauer P226 pistol, checked the magazine with a sharp clack, and slid it into his holster.

"It ends now," Damian said.

He turned to Sofia. "Stay here."

"I told you—"

"This isn't a debate, Sofia," Damian interrupted, his voice dropping into an absolute, commanding authority that left no room for argument. "Gregor is a trained assassin with nothing left to lose. If he realizes he's trapped, he will try to take everyone down with him. I need you down in the medical bunker with your mother and Marco. That is my only condition."

Sofia looked at him, seeing the fierce, unyielding protectiveness burning in his gaze. She nodded slowly. "Be careful."

May you like

"Always," Damian murmured.

He walked out of the bunker, the heavy steel door sealing shut behind him.
