Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Quiet TownMorning arrived in Bellwether not with the grand, polished bustle of the Vitale estate, but with a soft, golden sunlight filtering through towering pine trees. Aunt Rose’s cottage sat at the edge of a quiet valley, surrounded by overgrown apple trees and a rustic wooden barn.

Inside, the kitchen was warm. The scent of fresh coffee and buttered toast filled the room. Emily sat at the heavy oak table, wearing one of Rose’s oversized wool sweaters. Her medical folder lay open beside her plate, containing the precious ultrasound scan and her prenatal vitamin prescriptions.
"So," Rose said, setting down a mug of herbal tea in front of Emily. "The great Alessandro Vitale turned out to be a hollow suit with a big ego."
Emily managed a faint, bittersweet smile. "I spent seven years convincing myself that if I just kept the house perfect, if I just organized every charity gala seamlessly, he would notice me. I thought loyalty was something you earned by enduring."
"Loyalty is a mutual contract, honey," Rose said firmly, sitting across from her. "It’s not a ransom you pay to keep a man from looking elsewhere. You did the right thing by walking away. But you know he won't let this rest. Men with that much money don't like losing their property—and right now, in his mind, you're carrying the most valuable asset he thinks he owns."
Emily’s hand instinctually covered her stomach. "He doesn't care about the baby, Rose. He cares about his legacy. He cares about what the news will say if his wife vanishes while his mistress moves into the master suite."
She was right. In the city, the scandal was already beginning to fracture the smooth facade of Vitale Enterprises.
By noon, news of Emily’s abrupt departure had leaked to the high-society columns. The headlines were brutal: Vitale Dynasty Shattered: CEO Replaces Wife at Mother’s Birthday, Heiress Vanishes Into Thin Air.
In his high-rise executive office, Alessandro stared at his computer screen while three senior public relations advisors paced nervously across the Persian rug.
"The stock took a three-percent dip this morning," the lead consultant warned. "The board is asking questions. Your mother refused to issue a joint statement confirming that Emily left amicably. If the public finds out Emily is pregnant and was pushed out for Valentina, the family foundation’s charitable backing will collapse."
"She didn't leave amicably because I didn't give her permission to leave!" Alessandro shouted, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket.
Valentina entered the office without knocking, looking flustered. She was wearing a tailored white suit, trying desperately to play the role of the executive companion, but the staff treated her with cold, minimal compliance.
"Alessandro," Valentina complained, "the house staff is refusing to take orders from me. Mrs. Alvarez locked the linen closets and said only Mrs. Vitale has the combination. And your mother spent the entire morning packing her bags to move into her estate in Tuscany!"
"Then let her move!" Alessandro snapped, his eyes wild with stress. "Valentina, go home. Go back to your apartment."
Valentina blinked, stunned. "What? You told sixty people on Tuesday that I was the lady of the house!"
"I made a mistake!" he roared, the raw truth tearing out of his throat before he could stop it. "I thought Emily would stay! I thought she would sit in the background like she always did! I didn't know she was carrying my child!"
Valentina stepped back, her face turning pale with anger and humiliation. "So that's what this is? If she wasn't pregnant, you wouldn't give a damn that she left!"
"Get out," Alessandro whispered, turning his back on her to stare out at the city skyline.
When Valentina slammed the door, Alessandro turned to Marcus, who was standing quietly by the door.
"Tell me you have a lead," Alessandro demanded.

"We tracked her debit card," Marcus reported quietly. "She bought a single bus ticket to a small town four hours north. Bellwether. Her late mother had a sister living on an agricultural parcel up there."
Alessandro’s chest tightened. "Prepare the cars. We're driving north."
