Chapter 6 - The Fall of the EmpireThe courtroom recording didn't stay inside the county courthouse.

Within twenty-four hours of the preliminary hearing, a copy of the audio file was leaked to major national news outlets. The scandal exploded across television networks and financial journals.
The public backlash was instantaneous and devastating. The narrative of the humble, gracious wife being publicly humiliated and cast out while carrying an unborn child struck a deep chord with millions. Boycotts against Vitale Enterprises spread across social media like wildfire.
Major institutional investors began pulling their capital. A high-profile luxury retail partnership with a French fashion conglomerate was abruptly canceled, citing a direct breach of the brand's ethical standards clause.
In the boardroom of Vitale Enterprises, the board of directors held an emergency meeting without Alessandro present.
Sophia Vitale walked into the conference room, wearing a striking black dress, holding a stack of proxy votes. She had officially returned from Tuscany to take control of her late husband's voting shares.
"Alessandro has compromised the fundamental integrity of this institution," Sophia announced to the board members, her voice resolute. "His personal arrogance has cost this company over forty million dollars in market value in less than two weeks. I am moving for an immediate vote of no confidence to remove him as Chief Executive Officer."
The vote was unanimous.
An hour later, Alessandro sat in his temporary office at the Bellwether inn, staring at his tablet screen as the formal notification arrived: Executive Board Action: Removal of Alessandro Vitale from Executive Office.
He had lost his company. He had lost his public standing. The empire he had spent fifteen years building had cast him out in a matter of days.
A heavy knock sounded at his door. It was Marcus.
"Mr. Vitale," Marcus said quietly, setting a plane ticket on the desk. "Your mother asked me to deliver this. The board has offered you a severance package, but you are required to step down publicly by tomorrow morning. She suggests you take a leave of absence abroad."
Alessandro didn't look at the ticket. He looked at a small, framed photograph he had taken from his desk in the city—a photo of Emily from four years ago, laughing in a garden, back when her eyes still held light and joy.
"She offered me everything, Marcus," Alessandro whispered, his voice hollowed out by grief. "She gave me seven years of complete devotion, and I treated it like a right instead of a privilege."
"You thought power was about control, sir," Marcus said softly. "Mrs. Vitale knew that power was about endurance. She endured until she had no reason left to stay."
Alessandro stood up, taking his coat. "Where is she now?"
"She is at the clinic in town, sir," Marcus answered. "She has her first comprehensive ultrasound scan with the regional specialist today."
Alessandro grabbed his keys. "I'm going there."

"Sir, the court issued a temporary restraint—"
"I don't care about the court!" Alessandro cried out, tears finally breaking past his eyes. "I don't want the company back! I don't care about the shares! I just need to see my child!"
