Chapter 7 - The View Through the GlassThe Bellwether Community Clinic was a small, brick building surrounded by maple trees shedding their golden leaves. Inside, the waiting room was quiet, filled with the soft rustle of magazines and the gentle hum of a heating vent.

Emily sat in an examination room, the warm gel resting on her swelling abdomen. Beside her stood Aunt Rose, holding her hand tightly.

On the black-and-white monitor, the image was no longer just a tiny flicker. The baby had grown—a distinct, tiny human shape, its heartbeat pulsing steady and strong on the audio monitor. Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.

The physician smiled warmheartedly. "Everything looks fantastic, Emily. Strong cardiac rhythm, healthy development. You're doing wonderfully."

Emily looked at the screen, tears of pure, unadulterated love spilling over her cheeks. For the first time in months, the heavy dark cloud that had hovered over her life felt completely dispelled.

Outside in the hallway, standing behind the narrow glass panel of the consultation door, stood Alessandro.

He was restrained by two local police officers who had been called by the clinic staff the moment he arrived, but they had paused, allowing him one single, silent moment to look through the glass.

Alessandro watched his wife laugh through her tears. He heard the faint, rapid sound of his child’s heartbeat echoing softly through the door's frame.

He saw the way Rose gently brushed a strand of hair from Emily's face, a gesture of fierce, protective maternal love that he had failed to provide.

He realized then, with absolute and horrifying finality, that he was an outsider to his own family. He was a spectator to the life he had thrown away.

Emily turned her head slightly, her eyes catching the reflection in the glass. She saw Alessandro standing there—unkempt, broken, surrounded by officers, his face streaked with tears.

There was no hatred in her eyes anymore. There was no anger, no bitterness, no desire for revenge.

There was only a deep, serene indifference.

She slowly looked away, returning her gaze to the monitor, choosing the life in front of her over the ghost standing outside.

Alessandro fell to his knees in the clinic corridor, weeping quietly as the officers gently escorted him out into the cold autumn rain.
