Chapter 6 - The Trap Snaps Shut

Victoria sneered at me, completely drunk on her own perceived invincibility. "Oh, look, the meddling housewife is back! What, did you bring your little brat along to watch this degenerate get what he deserves?"
That was the fatal mistake.
The moment those vile words left her mouth, two things happened simultaneously. Several shoppers in the crowd audibly turned against her, gasping in disgust at her attack on an eight-year-old child. And David Ross’s eyes turned into flint.
"Marcus," David said to the cashier without breaking eye contact with Victoria. "Call the front desk. Have them lock the primary entrance and notify our loss-prevention officer at the loading dock that we have a code red."
Victoria laughed, a high, mocking sound that grated against the nerves. "Locking the doors? Good! Keep the police from having to chase this boy down when they arrive!"
"The police are already in the parking lot," David replied evenly. "Officer Martinez and his partner were parked outside having lunch. They’re walking in right now."
At the mention of Officer Martinez, a tiny flicker of hesitation flickered across Victoria’s eyes. It was barely noticeable—just a split-second twitch of her eyebrow—but it was there. She reached into her trench coat pocket, subtly adjusting her grip on her oversized tote bag.
"Good," she said, though her voice had lost a fraction of its booming confidence. "Then let's speed this up. Search his cart."
David didn't touch the cart. Instead, he turned to the crowd of onlookers.
"Ladies and gentlemen," David announced, his voice carrying clearly over the humming refrigeration units. "I want to apologize for the disturbance in our store today. But before anyone leaves, I want to show you all something very educational."
David reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. He plugged a small wireless receiver into his device, and suddenly, the overhead audio screens positioned near the customer service desk flickered to life.
Victoria frowned. "What is this cheap theatrical nonsense?"
"You told your live audience that Toby violently shoved this cart at you," David said, pointing to the screen above the aisle. "You told them Toby is an incompetent liability who belongs in an institution. And you claimed he had stolen merchandise in his pocket."
David hit play on the remote.
The high-definition video from Chloe's tablet beamed onto the overhead display screen for every single person in Aisle 4 to see.
The audio of Victoria's phone call boomed through the store speakers with crystal-clear clarity:
*"...The blind spot in Aisle 4 is still unmonitored; my guy checked yesterday. I’m grabbing the Swiss regenerative serum—it’s four hundred a jar. When I drop the cart, I’ll claim the retard working the aisle assaulted me..."*
A collective, horrified gasp sucked all the air out of the aisle.
Victoria froze. Her face didn't just lose color; it turned an ash-gray shade of rotting parchment. Her jaw dropped open, her phone lowering in her trembling hand as her screen flooded with hundreds of angry, horrified comments from her own live viewers:
*WAIT WHAT DID SHE JUST SAY?!*
*DID SHE STAGE THIS?!*
*SHE USED A SLUR! UNFOLLOW! REPORT!*
*CALL THE COPS ON HER!*
The video continued, showing the crisp, undeniable mirror reflection: Victoria pulling the luxury serum from the shelf, using wire cutters on the tags, violently kicking Toby’s wheel lock, shoving the heavy cart into the glass shelves, and dropping the tags into Toby’s smock pocket.
"No..." Victoria whispered, her eyes darting frantically like a trapped rat looking for an exit. "No, that's... that's deepfake! That's an AI video! She fabricated that!"
"My eight-year-old daughter doesn't know how to make deepfakes, Ms. Sterling," I said, stepping right up to her. "She was just trying to record a dance for her grandmother. But you were so focused on destroying an innocent young man's dignity that you never bothered to check your surroundings."
Victoria spun around, attempting to bolt toward the side exit by the bakery, but two uniform police officers—Officer Martinez and his partner—stepped into the aisle, blocking her path entirely.

"Going somewhere, Victoria?" Officer Martinez asked, his hand resting calmly on his utility belt.
