Chapter 7 - Unmasked

Victoria backed up against the cereal display, clutching her designer tote against her chest like a shield. The arrogance that had defined her ten minutes ago had completely vanished, replaced by wild, erratic panic.
"Officer! Thank God you're here!" she shrieked, her voice cracking into a desperate wail. "These people are harassing me! They edited a fake video to humiliate me! This manager is running a scam, and that woman is an accomplice! Look at my boots—they ruined my property!"
Officer Martinez didn't even blink. He was a veteran cop with twenty years on the force, and he knew a con artist when he saw one.
"Ms. Sterling," Martinez said, his voice flat and authoritative. "We know who you are. And we’ve been waiting for you to slip up for six months."
Victoria’s breath caught in her throat. "What are you talking about?"
"Detective Reynolds over at the Wayne precinct has had an open file on a woman matching your exact description staging slip-and-fall claims at three different retail chains in the county," Martinez explained, taking a slow step forward. "Every single time, the target was an employee with a disability or an elderly cashier who couldn't defend themselves against your threats of public exposure. Each time, high-end inventory went missing during the commotion."
"That's a lie! That's slander!" Victoria screamed, thrusting her phone forward again. "I am broadcasting live to fifteen thousand people! You cannot violate my civil rights!"
"Actually, Ms. Sterling," David chimed in, pointing up at the overhead monitor where the live stream was still visible. "Your live stream ended two minutes ago. Your followers reported your account for hate speech and harassment, and the platform terminated your stream."
Victoria looked down at her phone screen. A red error banner flashed across the glass: **ACCOUNT SUSPENDED FOR VIOLATION OF COMMUNITY GUIDELINES**.
A strangled sob escaped her throat.
"Now," Officer Martinez said, stepping into her personal space. "Set the bag down on the floor, ma'am. Slowly."
"No! This is a vintage Birkin bag! You don't have a warrant!"
"Under retail theft statutes, when probable cause of an active felony is established by eyewitness testimony and video evidence, we have the authority to search your person," Martinez countered smoothly. "Put the bag down, or you will be placed on the ground and handcuffed for resisting."
Victoria’s eyes darted left and right. The crowd of shoppers was no longer silent. They were pulling out their own phones, filming her every move, shaking their heads in disgust.
"You're a monster!" an older woman in the front row shouted at her. "Picking on that poor boy! Shame on you!"
"Disgusting!" another man called out. "Put her in handcuffs!"
Seeing that she was completely surrounded and utterly abandoned, Victoria let out a guttural shriek of fury and hurled her heavy tote bag directly at David’s face.
David ducked with athletic reflexes honed from years of playing baseball. The heavy leather bag struck the floor with a dull thud, bursting open.
Out tumbled three gold boxes of Swiss anti-aging serum—each valued at four hundred and fifty dollars. Alongside them spilled a pair of industrial mini wire-cutters, a skeleton display key, two stolen designer perfumes from another store, and four clipped security tags.
