Chapter 9 - The Aftermath

The story didn't end when the police cruiser pulled out of the Oakridge Market parking lot.

In the modern digital age, truth has a way of moving faster than lies. Within four hours, several of the shoppers who had filmed Victoria Sterling's meltdown and arrest posted their raw footage online.

By Tuesday evening, the hashtag **#JusticeForToby** was trending number one across Twitter and TikTok in the United States.

The contrast between Victoria’s grotesque cruelty and Toby’s innocent concern about someone slipping on the juice touched the hearts of millions. The video garnered over twenty million views in twenty-four hours. National news outlets picked up the story, with morning shows praising Chloe’s quick thinking and David’s unwavering loyalty to his nephew.

Meanwhile, the legal consequences came crashing down on Victoria Sterling like an avalanche.

Because the stolen merchandise in her bag exceeded a thousand dollars, the charges were automatically elevated to a felony. Furthermore, Officer Martinez’s investigation revealed that the skeleton key found in her purse had been stolen from an employee locker room three months earlier, adding burglary to the indictment.

The other retail stores in Wayne and Bryn Mawr immediately recognized her from the viral footage and filed formal grand larceny charges against her for past incidents. Her luxury brand partnerships were terminated overnight. Her social media accounts were permanently banned. Her husband, a prominent corporate attorney, filed for divorce within forty-eight hours to distance his firm from the catastrophic public relations fallout.

Victoria was remanded to Chester County Prison on a fifty-thousand-dollar cash bail, facing up to seven years in state prison.

On Thursday morning, two days after the incident, David called my cell phone.

"Sarah?" David’s voice sounded rested, lighter than I had ever heard it before. "Are you and Chloe free this Saturday morning around ten?"

"We are, David," I said, smiling into the phone. "What's going on?"

"Oakridge Corporate called an emergency board meeting yesterday," David explained, his voice bubbling with excitement. "The CEO flew in from Chicago. They saw the news. They saw how the community rallied around Toby, and they want to hold a special ceremony at the store on Saturday. They specifically asked for you and Chloe to be the guests of honor."

"We wouldn't miss it for the world," I told him.

When I hung up, Chloe looked up from her coloring book. "Is Toby happy now, Mom?"

"Toby is very happy, baby," I said, stroking her hair. "Because you taught a whole town that the truth always finds its way into the light."
