Chapter 8 - The Weight of Justice

Officer Martinez and his partner didn't hesitate for another second.

Before Victoria could take two steps toward the loading dock exit, Martinez took hold of her wrist, executing a textbook arm-bar control hold, and spun her against the display shelving.

"Victoria Sterling, you are under arrest for grand retail theft, filing a false police report, criminal mischief, and disorderly conduct," Martinez said firmly, pulling her arms behind her back.

The sharp, metallic snap of steel handcuffs echoed through Aisle 4.

"Get your filthy hands off me!" Victoria screamed, thrashing wildly like a hooked fish. Her designer sunglasses fell to the floor, instantly crushing beneath Martinez's heavy boots. Her bleached hair was a tangled mess across her sweaty forehead. "Do you know who my husband is?! Do you know the lawyers I have on retainer?! I will sue every single person in this building! I will own this pathetic grocery store!"

"You can tell all of that to the magistrate at central booking," Martinez replied calmly, steering her firmly down the aisle.

As she was marched past the crowd, the shoppers erupted into spontaneous, thunderous applause. People cheered, clapped, and jeered as the fallen influencer was paraded out the front glass doors in total disgrace.

David didn't watch her leave. He turned his back on the spectacle completely and knelt down once again beside Toby, who had slowly risen from the milk crate.

"It’s over, Toby," David said, his voice thick with tears. "You’re safe. Everyone knows the truth."

Toby wiped his wet eyes with the sleeve of his blue smock. He looked over at the crowd, who were now smiling warmly at him, offering encouraging words.

"Good job, Toby!"

"We love you, buddy!"

"You didn't do anything wrong!"

Toby looked down at the puddle of juice and glass still covering the floor. Even after being publicly humiliated, accused of theft, and degraded with hateful slurs, his first instinct was pure, unadulterated goodness.

"Uncle David?" Toby whispered.

"Yes, buddy?"

"I still need to clean up the juice," Toby said softly, his voice trembling with sincerity. "Someone might slip and get hurt."

A lump formed in my throat so large it felt impossible to swallow. Several shoppers in the crowd openly began wiping tears from their faces.

David smiled through his own tears, pulling his nephew into a fierce, protective embrace. "No, Toby. You don't have to clean this up today. Marcus and I will take care of it. You’re taking the rest of the day off, and we’re going to get double-fudge ice cream."

Toby pulled back, a faint, familiar smile finally returning to his face. "Can Chloe have ice cream too?"

Chloe beamed, stepping out from behind my legs. "Only if it has rainbow sprinkles, Toby!"

Toby laughed—a loud, joyful, pure sound that shattered the lingering darkness in the aisle better than any justice system ever could. "Double sprinkles for Chloe!"
